Is naming the disc with a sharpie recommended

What are your thoughs on writing on the top of the backup disc. Is it recommended? If so, will a sharpie do? What about in the long run? Will the ink seep through and ruin the backup in time? Just want to know before I start writing on my backups.

I've been writing on backup CD-Rs, Playstation backups, PS2 backups, Xbox backups, Xbox 360 backups and pretty much everything I've ever burned with a sharpie, and I've yet to find any problem at all.
I say its safe to do.

i tend to use, lead based exterior house paint when ever possible, but when im out i use a sharpie, so far no problems.
I have lost all and any respect i had for this site!

yeah, sharpie is the way. Stay away from labels since if it is put the slightest way off center, it will cause disk to wobble, all though you may not realize it your laser will hate you for this. Lightscribe is the way to go but Verb's don't have lightscribe faces (YET)...

you do.
its a brand of a marker.
you know they let you use them after you learn how to color in the lines with crayons.
I have lost all and any respect i had for this site!

I was wondering this too
I'm like a girl. I put sharpie all over the DVD, My logo has to look just like the Original. I'm worried It's gonna stop reading.

Like Ian1324, I have used them for years, as he has, with labeling my discs. No issues what so ever.
All of those backups (some several years old) still work to this day without issues.

The sharpie will have no effect on how the disc plays. What will is if you use some kind of label instead. That even with it's vey light weight will cause the disc to spin slightly off center and can cause problems.
If you want better discs as far as looks then you have two choices.
1. get lightscribe discs and a lightscribe burner. Problem with those is no color but the graphics they make are top notch. And you can get the image files of the original covers and discs online so it will be a gold and black version of the original disc.
2. Then there are printers that can print on DVD's, and they do it in full color. I have never looked into them so i do not know a lot about them. But from what i have seen the disc comes out looking great.
But i have found that the discs needed for the printer have to be the white label top type and for some people they work great, for me i had some great results with movies but mixed results for games.

printing directly onto discs is awesome. i do this with all my xbox 360 games and dvds and they come out top notch everytime.
Verb 2.4x printable dvd+r DL.
Burn the game
go2 cdcovers.cc
get your covers
Use Epson Print CD to prepare the cd template (EPSON STYLUS Photo R200)
put the disc on the cdtray
put the tray in the printer and hey presto,
near perfect quality full colour lables.
only problem is the ink is very easily smudged but you can easily buy a can of cd/dvd sealer spray.
they look just like original ones

Sharpie has never done long term tests to determine whether its ink will degrade data over time. The Sanford (owns sharpie)web site warns that other markers ink CAN destroy data on discs (especially on DVDs). Be careful...
In general DVDs are much more susceptible to data damage from labeling methods. Fellowes specifically warns against using sticker labels for DVDs.
To be safe I always use my Dymo DiscPainter to label all discs. It is faster than LightScribe (1 min vs 20+ min) and prints in full color. Document printers that have disc print capability are OK...when they work. Many people find those printers annoying to use because the feed trays they use are notoriously temperamental and only work half the time. These are my opinions and observations. You can label your discs anyway you like. Just my 2 cents worth.

very nice, and i respect you opinion. But you left out the fact that the printer you use is $250 or more at most online stores.
A lightscribe burner is $35
A Sharpie is 99 cents
and Sharpies WILL NOT harm the data on your discs, at least not over the many years that i have been using them.

I guess if you were saving extremely important data that you would like to be able to access 10 years from now, then maybe you shouldn't use a sharpie, or any other brand of marker. If that's the case, then you should probably have another form of backup as well. For most things, movies, songs, games, etc..., in a worst case scenario, you could also purchase it again in the future. While I don't like the idea of having to pay for something that I've already purchased, it might be my only option if the sole disc I have is no longer readable. Again, this is where backups are important. In this case, a backup of a backup might be required for long term storage. Of course, 10 years from now, we'll probably have an official study letting us know that sharpies cause cancer. =Þ

The reason why I started this thread is because I have the same setup as you and have been using Taiyo Yudens Ink Printables for all my projects with great Success. Since Taiyo Yudens don't make DL, I ordered a 20 pk from newegg.com for the Verb 2.4x printable dvd+r DL from singapore and had a horrible success rate. Out of 20, 11 were coasters. My brother had the same average failures on his 20 pk. I ended going to Office Max and bought a 20 pk of regular DVD+R DL and had a 100% 20 for 20 success rate. Although the printed ones look great when they work, I cannot handle the cost of getting 9 out of 20 burns right especially at $53 a pk.
So now I am a Sharpie Man!
