I'm currently streaming avpr Alien Vs. Predator. It was a 700 something megabyte file. Usually the quality of movies that are around this size are shitty. Macroblocks poor quality in low light scenes. But i guess the cell upscales them. It has increased the quality of the file at least 5 fold. I'm impressed.

No HD upscaling unless it's a DVD.

I have no idea. One guess is that the processor is awesome enough to play the video in better quality than a normal computer's processor. I don't know enough about videos to prove that, though. Just putting that out there.

If it's playing off a storage media, then the only reason that it looks better is probably down to the TV, a PC screen has a higher resolution, and tends to pick out more imperfections in the image, plus making artifacts more obvious.

I have an HD TV not a HD laptop the reso is higher on my tv. It looks alot better from saved media and streamed media, even when the files are kept unaltered from the downloaded state and burnt to a data dvd. I play them on a stand alone divx player on a plasma downstairs and they still dont look as good as when streamed or played through the PS3. What is the reason for this? I know my what my eyes are seeing and there is a difference in quality.

That probably is a conributing reason, also, if you were to burn it to a DVD, then play that DVD through the PS3 it would look even better quality as it upscales to full HD. If you say your TV has a higher resolution i presume it's 1080p? Because all standard PC screens today are higher than 720p.

He wasn't really being childish, it's a fair comment to make, but you're right about this being the wrong forum for such matters.

Skoz it was,i would consider it bashing,but thats my opinion,there was no need for him to post it here,he may be right but saying that here is like adding petorol to a fire.
The Cell IS amazing and will be for the next few years.

Even when I use standard AV cables on my bedroom CRT TV, my movies/video clips still look waaay better than on my PC or when I use a normal DVD player. The PS3 handles mpeg movie differently, it may be that you see less artifacts but the difference in quality is unmistakable.

It's not like its the first time hes done this either, I had given him the benefit of the doubt long ago. Something like that constantly coming from a senior member isn't excusable imo.

I agree with you on this, the cell has a long way to go before most developers will be able to properly utilize it. But isn't having unlock-able potential a good thing for a supposedly 10 year console?

^10 year console as it is now? No way. The only chance to keep up for 10 years is , with well known Sony way.
and i mean, that in 2-3 years they will release a Slimmer upgraded/improved version with some more extras, that they will still call it PS3.and that version could last till 2016.
PS2 this way is almost 9 years old.
