Yellow dog linux booting problems!

I got a ps3 and i want yellow dog linux gone! Because i dont have an hdtv. So it wont display. Is there any way i can get rid of it withought formatting the whole harddrive on my ps3?

If not. If i do format the harddrive on my ps3 and install it in the ps3 will it install the firmware from the ps3? like the psp does? or do i need to download it and place it on the harddrive and then install it. Any guides would be nice!
