If you really want to know the quality of your discs then use a disc ID program. Then check a list online. Making a working back up is just saying that your burner and 360 drive can use them without conflict.

I have heard of people using those discs but only time will tell. If the back ups stop working or your laser burns out you'll know they were not great quality.

the discs have been good for over a year now.but i did have to have a new laser not long ago could be down to media? or could be crap laser like most of the xbox components ?what do you guys reckon? im still happy with the discs hardly any coasters but in the long run if its going to cause premature laser failure is it worth it .....

Bad disk causes laser to die. Its a fact.

A working backup does not mean the disks are good.
If you care about your laser you will use only Verbatims. Thats how it goes.

No one can estimate laser life because there are too many factors and all of them are slightly different.

As far as how discs cause laser failure, that is easy. Cheaper discs use cheaper dye on them. The laser has to strain harder to read the information on the cheaper dye. Not only that discs with cheaper dye have a tendency to wear out quicker. And can work one day and not the next (both playing and burning)

As was pointed out the life of laser is hard to estimate.
But there are several factors thet will shorten its life considerably.
Cheap disks are one of them.

You must know that all recordable media has a relatively soft dye so you can burn it at home.
Because the factory where they produce music cds or video game dvds they use a press to stamp dvds. It has a very hard and durable dye, but the data is hard pressed on disk. Not laser burned like we do it at home.

And there is a consensus that Verbatim is king, all the rest is worse. Considerably worse. And even home burnt Verbatims stress the laser much more than original disks. Because of "soft not so durable" dye.
