Samsung SH-D162D HELP ! -Reads Too Slowly

Purchased a new Samsung SH-D162D DVD Rom drive.
Flashed with latest Kreon firmware v1.0.
Read a game fine first time took 15-20 mins using XBC.
Read a couple of dual layer movies too , different regions and again was fine using DVD Decrypter.
4th time it read a game it took 1h 20mins reading only at 1.1x max.
Similarly DL movies take the same amount of time.
Now the read speed for DVDs does not go above 1.1x.
Another thing is whenever the drive is reading CPU usuage is around 100% , making other applications run very slow.
If anyone can help me with this , would be very grateful.

you need a bigger cpu.
i have noticed a difference in reading games sometimes, some are as fast as 20 min while others are much slower,like over a hour.
myself, i never use the pc for anything when i am ripping a game.
I have lost all and any respect i had for this site!

Ummmm. Possible but the game I ripped first time ripped fast, I tried to rip it again to compare.
And from 20mins before its now 80mins like all the others I have attempted.
I also made sure no other applications were running.
My other drive a DVD rewriter rips movies fine all very fast.
Trying to control the drive read speed using Nero etc also has no effect.
Maybe its a hardware fault.
Do you think reflashing the Kreon firmware would make a difference ?
And is that a simple process or do I have to reflash the original Samsung firmware and then flash to Kreon again ?

you can reflash the drive just in case but i dont think it will make a diff.
its easy to flash, just takes i minute or two, you can find what you need on xbins.
I have lost all and any respect i had for this site!

dont bother wasting your time reflashing, mine did the exact same thing you did. it was at .81 and read fast for about a month or so, and then droppped to an hour plus. flashed it to 1.0 and still reads slow. and i HIGHLY doubt its bc of his cpu. if memory serves corect, mine read faster when i was using a single core amd 3800+, and got slower when i put in a dual core 4200+ and stayed slow with an amd black 5200+ OCed to 3.2. could be bc its in whatever is opposite from PIO mode, but mines in PIO and still slow.

So basically it doesn't look a hardware fault.
The drive is not even 2 weeks old but changing it and then having the same thing occur with a new drive would be pointless.
I'm using an Athlon XP 2000+ and like you I doubt if it's a CPU issue.
It might be an issue with the Kreon firmware itself.

idoubt its an issue with kreon, as FW shouldnt make drives read slower over time. maybe its a setting with the program being used, make sure connections are secure, all the routine stuff.

Yeah checked all the connections - power and IDE.
Uninstalled and reinstalled device via Windows.
Used the drive with different ripping programs XBC, DVD Decrypter , Image burn and tested it using Nero's Test Drive tool.
Still the max reading speed remains at 1.1x
It's very puzzling and you are having a similar problem.
The only reason I think it might be Kreon is that the original spec. for the drive has it reading DVDs at 16x , however since flasing with Kreon , Nero identifies it as 8x only.
Even so I'm getting results 7 times slower than that.
I might physically change over the drive on the IDE cable and use it as the master device see if that helps.

try setting the Drive Jumper to Cable Select.
Mine red fast for the first few then it went real slow untill i set it to CS .
im Using a Dell XPS

there are a few things that it could be. I had a similar problem on my last PC format. Everything was working great until after the format, then a rip & burn process would take 2-3 hours.
1. replace the IDE cable
2. check the properties in the device manager and make sure it is set to DMA mode on that drive
3. If you have a system that can be overclocked then bump up the processor and memory just a bit
4. Check your jumper settings
5. you may even want to think about changing the order on your IDE cables. Like making the DVD drives master and any other IDE equipment on them slave.
6. another possibility would be your motherboards IDE channels. Some motherboards may have 2 IDE slots on them, but one of them will accept two devices (master/slave) while the other channel will only accept a master. Meaning that if you use two devices on the channel the slave will run extremely slow. This means your hard drive would go on the one channel cable while the two drives would have to go on the other. Most of the time this usually only comes on mobo's that have SATA slots as well, like mine since it has a bunch of SATA channels it really does not need all of the usual IDE channels
There is most likely some sort of conflict (which i am sure you already know). I can not tell you exactly what as mine seemed to straiten itself out, plus my drive was the SATA version.
After doing all Windows updates, reinstalling my burning program like Nero and such the drive just starting working fine again as mysteriously as it had stopped.

First thanks to all members who have replied to this post.
I have swapped over my drives on the Secondary IDE channel.
Now the Samsung is the master and my DVD Rewriter is the slave with jumpers set accordingly.
Designating my Rewriter as the slave hasn't changed it's performance , it's still fine.
Also if you are using XBC v2.7 Build:0265 make sure that under the options tab 'Drive Specific' is set to your correct drive ie SH-162D in my case.
For some reason the program always seems to default to SH-162C.
Ripping now seems to be back to a good speed just over 6x.
How long this lasts I don't know but if it goes slow again I will set the jumper on the Samsung to cable select as SL7Rips suggests.

Glad it seems to be working now. I am really not sure the drive in XBC is that important. It is always set to SH-D162C by default and i have a SH-D163A (the SATA version) and it has never given me a problem.

Agreed it's probably irrelevant.
Any drive should function perfectly whether running as a master or slave device.
It's probably an issue specific to this model.
