I've spent days reading a bunch of FAQs and various postings around the web, and for sake of mind I want to make sure I know what I'm getting into...
So I just purchased a new PSP 2000 online, along with a 2GB Duo stick and a Sony 2200 Mah battery. I should be receiving all of this by mid-week, in which then I want to get right into 'modding'.
My goal is to play ISO games right from the stick. I've found a few guides for n00bz such as myself, but I'm a bit confused on a few aspects.
#1 - Regarding the Pandora battery issue. From what I understand, the battery is used to unbrick a system.
*Is there any other purpose for having this?
*Do I need a Pandora battery for the initial downgrade
*Does a PSP battery service tool do the same thing as if I was to rip apart the batter for the pin5 mod?
*Does the Pandora Battery become useless after the initial downgrade (or whatever it is used for?) or can I use it as a spare battery?
#2 - Since I have never owned a PSP before, I'm curious is Sony forces firmware upgrades to the system through wi-fi, or do you get a choice? I'm used to my Xbox 360 where 'upgrades' are often required if you want to play a game.
Sorry for the n00b questions - hopefully I can make sense of this battery issue and start giving back to the community!
Thanks!
#2 -

1. The pandora battery can also downgrade ur psp to 1.5. which allows u to upgrade to a CFW. Since u have a slim, u need Despertar del Cementerio. U would need the pandora to downgrade a SLIM. Do u mean teh DATEl tool battery (if so then yes, if no then what battery service). Once u got it pandora, u can fix it back.
2. Yes, Sony limits some stuff, forcing u to upgrade. They will not force u, they ask u if u want to or not. Same some games are requires to play games. However, there is a psp coder known as Dark Alex. He makes a custom firmware which is same as the OFW but u can play ISO and homebrew.

Thanks for the quick reply. So now I understand that I'll need to downgrade my fresh-from-factory firmware to 1.5 before I can upgrade to any of the CFW such as 3.71 M33 (which I'll need to do to play games from stick...?)
Regarding the battery service tool - I was originally talking about the actual PSP Battery Service Tool (http://us.codejunkies.com/Products/PSP-Battery-Service-Tool__EF000530.aspx), but after more research, I see that there is also a Tool Service Mode Battery for $25 from codejunkies.
So here is what I understand...if I but the Datel Tool Battery, I won't have to mod my stock battery and this takes place of a Pandora battery - correct?
If I want to do the Pandora battery, I can do the hardmod w/pin #5 with the stock battery that comes with the PSP, and after I do the firware downgrade, the pandora battery will just be used for modding other PSPs or unbricking.
With the second choice, I'd have to buy an extra battery to play the PSP since my factory one was transformed into a Pandora.
Am I understanding this a bit better now?

Even though the Pandora is a physical hard mod and not software based?
(in other words - to revert back to original I'm guessing I would just resolder the #5 pin)?

If you hardware mod it it will be hard for you to unmod it because you will need to solder the pin again to the battery.Much safer is the softmod but you will need a psp homebrew enabled.

hmmm as far as i know, the battery that will come with your psp, you can convert it to pandora's battery and back to normal. just follow the pandora's guide here in afterdawn and you will not get lost. i promise. i've been in afterdawn for almost a year and my psp life came from afterdawn. just make sure, that you follow each-and-every-detail-word-per-word of the guide that you will be using.

Thanks - I'll follow the guide here. I'd much rather softmod but need to look into this 'psp homebrew enabled' aspect. Does this mean in order to do softmod of the battery - I'll need access to another 'modded' PSP?

Thought so - that won't work since all of my friends are 'legit' and don't care about homebrew.
Looks like the ol'#5 trick will have to do...

I ordered the Max Power Batter Tool from Codejunkies (hope this is a reputable, quick ship shop).
I've read some stuff that the slim battery has issues with Pandora if you don't have another modded psp on hand, so I went with the fat tool battery. Does this matter?

that's true. Slim batteries are not all certain works with pandora. However, fat battery would be the best. It would still work for slim except it sticks out( cuz its bigger). After pandora, the psp battery cant be used. Slim cant use fat batteries as normal batteries. They can only be used for pandora

wrong, the fat batteries can also be used in their normal state on a slim PSP.

Ok - so let me understand this.
If I use a Datel Tool Battery (fat - which sticks out), do all the file magic to change the firmware...my original PSP slim battery that came with the system will not work? If this is true, what battery would I have to use? The Datel is strictly a service mode I thought?

The original battery will be fine if it's not been used in the process of customising the PSP. If you are gonna use a datel to do the job then you don't use Pandora on your original anyway. You put that back in when you finished and away you go.

That is exactly what I plan to do - use the Datel to do the firmware chages, then use my original battery for power. I'm not a big fan of the fat battery look - however I figured the Datel fat battery is better in case any of my friends with the fat PSP want to do an upgrade.
Thanks for all the help everyone!

GUIDE: Universal Unbricker V3 Using Official Firmware FAT/SLIM PSP
rather than the:
GUIDE: Universal Unbricker V3 Using FAT 1.50 or FAT/SLIM custom firmware PSP

It's the same thing because you already have a pandora battery.
You must create only a magic memory stick with that guide, then use it with your bought pandora battery to mod your PSP.
