How do I 'lightscribe' on the data side of discs?

Lightscribe: I can't remember which company, but there is an alternative to it made by another company, LG or one of the others.
They call it something else.
As well as allowing you to write on the upper surface of the disc, this alos allows you to write on the data side of the disc - or at least so I read.
Now: first question - does anyone know what I'm talking about!!
If so: what is it that I'm referring to!!?

Secondly: I've got an LG Lightscribe drive.
Can I use this to write on the data side of the disc...?
Not having ever owned one, one big advnatage I could see is that you could label your discs (assuming you never wrote to the entire disc) without having to have a lightscribe disc!
Or am I missing something...?

You cannot do that on the DATA side. You must flip it over.

well... as i was saying...
there's a specific make of writer that i'm pretty sure u can write on the data side!
i can't remember what the make is!

i just looked it up on the web.
and the name i was looking for is: labelflash (though i'm sure it was also called something else).

it specifically says: "One special feature is that both the top side and the data side of the blank can be labeled"
so... again my question: can i use lightscribe to label the data side...?
from ur first response... i assume no?

well... u see this was my thinking: forget getting labelflash discs!
just write on the data side of the disc!
i.e. just get any ordinary disc and not bother with label flash!
ok: i need to leave space to write on.
i'm willing to live with that in return for being able to label my discs neatley.
but from what i gather: lightscribe won the fight!
labelflash: almost nowhere to be seen..

The LightScribe system recognizes whether or not the disc is label-side down, and it will not try to write a label to the data side, nor will it attempt to burn data to the label side. If the wrong side is presented for either data burning or label burning, your disc will be ejected and a software message will be displayed.

I gave up on lightscribe discs a while ago. I used it for a long time, but it could use higher resolution to print, and frankly it isnt any better than an inkjet printed disc. It requires special burners, and special discs, and you wind up with something that isnt so special. You can use non-lightscribe discs, and it will work just like a regular disc, just wont have the lightscribe printing on it. Anything that says it can print on the data side of a disc, would have to be printed in transparent ink to let the laser read/burn thru it, so i doubt if it will print on the data side.I looked at your link, and it says that Quote:

(its probably just a title burnt in a non-used area of the data side) It sounds like labelflash is better than lightscribe.. And even if it could print on the data side somewhere, whats the need for it? If i see purple data side looking at me & i dont know what the disc is, i turn over the disc to see what the label is. Its not that hard to do. A fine point sharpie works 4 me on all my backup discs. Call it manual-scribe technology.

i've given up.
i'm sticking to a permanent marker.
another question: cd label marker = permanent marker in disguise?
this is what i've alwats thought. is this true?

Yes. Every special CD or DVD marker ive bought is just a magic marker, or a Sharpie at a much higher price than a sharpie. Besides my CDs get scratched so easy, (4 wheeling) its not worth a special label. Starts skipping, it becomes a coaster, or an airborne target. :)

Hi Max,
Long time no see!
I always thought it would be fun to do some target practice on some CMC.Mag coasters!!Don't have any though, I quit using them 2 years ago when I came across your kitty!
