I apologize for simply asking a question which at first appears that I did not spend time searching the forum for an answer. But although it is a simple question, the answers provided are often muddied up with PAL/region issues and numerous other commnents from what other users attempted and when you get done reading, there is not a high level of confidence in the answer. SO HERE IS MY QUESTION. Hopefully, a knowledgeable user or moderator can give me a quick two or three sentence answer.

I have a wiikey WII with latest firmware updates (1.9g & 3.1u). I have been playing backup games fine; however, I have no Shop Channel or Virtual Console because I am afraid to perform the internet update which states "there is a new system update". I don't want to ruin everything I have for the ability to play classic Nintendo games. I will only perform this update if someone can clearly tell me what this update does and/or that it will not affect my console's wiikey. It shouldn't, because I have the latest versions of firmware, but if I have the latest versions, how come I need to perform a system update to activate the shop channel? Any help would be appreciated.

Related question.....I also have Metroid Prime 3 and would love to play it, but it requires an update to play. Same concerns....is there any real danger to me with my firmware versions? The threads on Prime 3 gave numerous steps to avoid problems, but I don't think they pertain to me since I have the latest firmware (and I only play U NTSC region games).

I REALLY WILL APPRECIATE ANYONE'S CLEAR ADVICE!!!!!!!

Thank You!

No problem at all with internet update though it may actually just be the standard message which you get if you go look to check if there is an update. It offers the update with a warning even if there is none. So go ahead anyway. You prolly won't get an update and even if you do it should be fine.

You will be fine to take the Metroid Prime update from your region only and also the SMG update if you wish given that your system is at 1.9g/3.1u.

Thank you juniR!

That is exactly the concise, clear response that I was looking for. I assumed that the updates would be OK, but that's a tough assumption to follow through with unless you have someone to confirm it. Also, I did update and play SMG without any problems so I will now go ahead and try Metroid Prime 3.

Thanks again.....it's great to have this forum available.

Thanks again! I performed the internet system update last evening and no problems resulted. Now I have the virtual console and shop channel (plus some other small add-ons).

I've been away for a couple days but as far as I know the answer to that question is still no. However you can run a dual layer backup. Go figure :p

The answer to that is actually still unknown until it comes out. The original jpn didnt work but the backup did. So we wont know until the original US version is out. In any event if you have 1.9g then your backup will likely work :)

My current systems :)
