Here's what the Xbox 360 is doing: I power on the Xbox and all the lights are normal, the Xbox logo screen boots up then it goes immediately to a purple screen that says "Can?t find the update disc. Please insert the disc" ok so I downloaded the update disk from xbox.com and burned it to a DVD+R and popped it in the Xbox and press the button and I get a screen that shows the progress of the update, and then it goes to a screen that says you cannot update this Xbox please call Microsoft. yad yad. I?ve tried to boot the Xbox with the update disk in the Xbox, still the same and I?ve also try to run the update using a USB stick, still the same, the Xbox can not be returned.

Does anyone have any suggestion?

Every game has the update. You have to put in the exact game that it was updating from to finish its update.

The reason for this error from my understanding is that your xbox has an older firmware on it that the new update stops, usually something as old as xtreme 3.x. What you need to do is update your firmware on your box first, then continue with the game update from that exact game, and your golden.

I had this exact same problem last year when the spring patch came out for crackdown. But I knew what did it and what game it was that crashed my machine and was an easy fix.

But just finding the game won't fix it because the update kills your machine until you get a current firmware that is smarter then the update.

So your saying that you think the Xbox had been modded with a hacked firmware and then Game update locked up the xbox because it had the hacked firmware?

And so if i flash the dvd-rom with a new hacked firmware and then put the game back in it should fix the prob.

Basically yes, but you need the exact game that locked up the box last time to fix it. Like if it got locked up from Crackdown, you need Crackdown to unlock it after you update your firmware. If you just put in crackdown w/o a firmware update, then you will be exactly where you are right now.

This happened to me as well. I have one game that I have played. I insert that and it does not finish updating. Any other ideas?

I am using xtreme 1.4 on a benq drive. However, when I flashed it I used 1234567 61005 as my s/n. Is that a problem?

Sorry, I AM a newbie, but have read nearly everything I could before posting...

Thanks.

Hi there, thought I would revive this thread and add what my experience has been with this problem.

My xbox has never been modded, and the problem started after watching a movie and then turning it off (retail dvd). I've been looking into it for a couple of weeks now and posting on another forum about it, here is the information from that post. Basically I believe I've run myself out of options, so any other input would be greatly appreciated:

This is a fairly large quote so I hope I'm not offending anyone, just trying to give all the information I've picked up in the issue.

Quote:
System is a core console, first gen. I hooked up a hard drive and same thing. I also learned that you don't need a drive, after I bought one of course. I can't even get to the dashboard screen. Any help with this would be appreciated, here's what I've already tried:

Booting up with downloaded update disc in drive.
Booting up with no disc in drive.
Making sure the disc was finalized.
Making sure it wasn't.
Using dvd+r, dvd-r, cd-r
Putting update in folder.
Leaving update outside of folder.
Booting up with GHIII in hopes it would update the dash (long shot).
Booting up with disc in drive while holding the sync button down.
Booting up with no disc in drive while holding the sync button down.
Doing all of these while connected my modem, and while offline.

No matter what I do I get the same result: The xbox begins to power up like normal, then says it's updating and instantly goes to a purple screen saying "Cannot find the update disc. Please reinsert the disc" and when I do and hit "A" to continue, I get "Can't update your console. Please contact..." etc.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've been all over the place looking and I can't seem to come up with anything. I even called Xbox support and they said to send it in for 100 bucks, I just wanted to see what they had to say on the issue, I was on the phone with them for a half an hour.

I'm positive there has to be some kind of solution to this, it's just a software problem. I'm beginning to even doubt that a mod would be an effective solution to this problem

reply from another user:

------------------------

Hey there, I am in the same boat as you. EXACTLY.

Any way...Here is what I have done so far:

I have done all of those things you did, But I did find out that my game was "Prey" and I did try to update it with that disc in the drive, with and without the HDD, hooked to the internet and all of that. Nothing

I have tried to load just a Dvd and still nothing. My working console boots right to the dvd and never gets a dashboard screen. This broken one will not.

I am starting to think that the drive may be bad, this dvd drive may have went bad also.

I have been reading about swapping a DVD drive and the keys have to be correct to play, BUT, if the keys are incorrect, then you will not be able to play games, BUT you WILL be able to watch a DVD movie.

So I was thinking of taking my working dvd drive out and putting it into my broken console to see if it play the dvd movie. While I have them both apart I will also try the broken DVD drive in my working console to see if that will boot to the DVd movie.

That is all we can try.

I will post my findings....

If any of my info is bad then can somebody please add there info to this...

Thanks

-----------------------

my replys since then:

-----------------------

Hey there.

Since the last post I've gone and bought another 360 to use. Today I brought out the old one still with the shell off and got rrod when I turned it on. I'll go over it again. That's really not the issue anyway, rrod is an easy fix.

I've been on live with the new box and updated, so I'm going to knock off the rrod and try with my updated hdd connected to the box just to see if I can get a different result.

I've cleaned my disc drive as well just to be sure. Cleaning it didn't produce any results either.

Not really desperate to get it fixedasap, but I am desperate to just win now, haha. I'll keep you posted on anything I come up with. Thanks for sharing your info!

----------------------

reply from other user:

----------------------

I just used the dvd drive from the console that was giving me the disc not detected and put it into my working consloe. the drive is working and palying dvd movies great. My working dvd drive in the bad console still does nothing other than say the same thing "disc not detected"

So the dvd drive is good but still a problem in the console...

Also with the dvd drive removed you will get a boot up normally and will get to a dashboard but will get a blinking green center light.

The bad console does see the drive connected with a solid green light and also sees when it is disconnected (flashing center light) but will not seem to update anything fron any disc or Hdd to get to the main dashboard.

Next??

----------------------

my most recent reply:

----------------------

Well I tried it with the updated drive attached and same thing. However, I hit the sync button just for kicks and managed to produce the freezing video error, so at least it's something different. If I can successfully reproduce it, I'm gonna chase down that lead and let you know what I come up with. It's possible that the two different problems are related somehow.

Hey at this point anythings an idea right? =p

Anyone have anything to add that we may not have tried yet? Thanks in advance!

Well I think it is a bad epprom flash, that?s the only thing I can think of. I?m wondering if a modchip with epprom bypass would fix it. I?m not sure they even have those for the 360. I have since reflash with the new 1.4 firmware with no luck.

When you say " your xbox has an older firmware, and you need to update your firmware on the xbox first" are you talking about the frimware on the DVD drive or the actual XBOX motherboard itself?

Just asking... I know how to update the firmware on my samsung (and will when I get my Via vt6421a card in) but i did not know if you could write to the xbox motherboard itself (I am probably mistaken)

So chances are that if I update to the lasted firmware for my samsung (which I believe is xtreme 1.4) I will be able to put the disk back in and then continue with the update?
As for now I cannot do anything.
Is this extreme 1.4 the stock software from MS or is it hacked. I would like to know and install a legit firmware that M$ will not ever hack again. Thanks.
But just finding the game won't fix it because the update kills your machine until you get a current firmware that is smarter then the update.

unfortunately those are the breaks when you deal with ebay 360s. I've had my fair share of bad flashes and hack jobs.

Here's a little snippet I found that may be of interest:

Quote:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEFFZulpuuTdYzDcXf.php

>> CrackerJack (cjack) of darkmoon.org bought a core and premium Xbox 360 system and sent us an email with some info. He also posted several comments in this thread on our forums.

He noticed that while his core system has the EEPROM chip near the CPU, his premium Xbox 360 does not have this chip. However it does not seem to be core/premium related as my (XanTium's) premium Xbox 360 has this eeprom chip.

He desoldered the TSOP of his 2 consoles and inverted them. The TSOP of Premium soldered in the Core console did not work. The 'ring of light' blinked red ... black screen. He resoldered both TSOPs in correct consoles ... and everything worked fine again.
Now here's the part that interests me:

Quote:
He also desoldered the eeprom from his Core Xbox 360 and, a bit unexpectedly, the console worked fine without the eeprom chip! Dashboard version and Kernel versions (backup version too) were the same as when the eeprom was there. Everything worked fine, games boot without problems, Xbox LIVE worked too...
So apparently the core system can run just fine without the eeprom. Possible course of action? Opinions? I may just try this since I have nothing to lose and don't really care if I ever fix this thing. I'll have to run out and grab a kit though this weekend so it's gonna be awhile before I have any results.

Interesting, well I think we've pretty much established that it's a mainboard issue and not drive firmware. So at least we have a new path of investigation. My theory was that my eeprom was close to the CPU so it may have gotten cooked/corrupted when my box first went rrod. However, since yours doesn't have it, then it's possibly info stored on another chip somwewhere close by. What's your manufacture date? Mine is Sept 2005.

gameover9 I believe so, yes, but don't quote me on that. With mine it crapped out after watching a movie. I shut it off, and when I went to turn it on the next day it was done.

I never did get to the bottom of the problem. This was a long time ago now, I've since bought a new one with a Jasper mainboard in it... no worries whatsoever since.

Over the long term, that's really your only solution. you'll be fighting with these problems forever otherwise.

Just received an xbox360 to fix with rrod and fixed. once fixed i was prompt with the same error 'cannot update blah blah blah....' so i tried everything sync button held in etc... and not a chance. So i took it round to m8's house whose got a collection of ORIGINAL games and inserted each at a time until Mirrors Edge updated it, reset the console automatically and up it went. No probs... as suggested early in this thread, insert the game it faulted on or another game nearer the same time of release. And only one thing I may add, if you have the same game it faulted on, on the update screen insert the disk but dont press A till the disk has spun up. Hope this helps.
