read PS2 discs like the 60 or 80 or is my only way going to be modding?

The 20 60 and 80 gig are all capable of playing ps2 games. It is impossible even with modding to play ps2 games on the 40 gig.

The 80GB has software emulation for PS1/PS2 games.
The 60GB/20GB both use hardware.
Just a little bit of extra information for you :)
