Hi there

Ive been doing some research on lightscribe and the topic of epson printers keeps on coming up. Ive decided to pose everyone a question:

Im looking to make the most professional looking labels possible. Obviously, i want to reduce my costs.

It seems like lightscribe was the way to go, but on further research i found out that they do not yet burn in color. Ive found a used lightscribe external burner for 60$ or so. I also found media that, if buying in bulk, breaks down to aprox. 50c a cd/dvd. Is this the way to go?

Epson printers look pretty good too. I think im leaning more in this direction, but im not quite sure. Whats the best printer to get thats within reasonable price? (<200-250) Also, i have to factor in the cost of ink, which, for some printers, is quite cheap. Are there special DVDR and CDR that must be purchased for these printers? and if so, how much do they cost?

I'm going to be buying cd+r and dvd+r in packs of 100 probably. So im looking to burn a lot of disks.

Any of your input would be helpful

Thanks

I will agree that the printable media looks very good.

However, I use lightscribe because to me it looks cool. And now you can buy different colour discs to scribe onto. But I think it just comes down to personal preference. I like lightscribe cuz it looks sweet and I dont have to buy a printer and do not need to keep buying ink. But maybe you will like the way printables look better.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee. - Jules Winfield

yeah the thing is i cant find a direct comparison between epson printer and lightscribe. (like, a comparison with pictures of the final product) Im going to have to do different backgrounds etc. so im leaning more towards epson printers. But i dont have any examples? Anybody have any from their own epson printer?

Thanks

As a longtime Epson R200 owner, and the possessor of thousands of inkjet-printed discs...until LightScribe goes full color (if ever) this is no contest. The technology is nifty, no doubt, but a binder full of what are essentially monochromatic sepia discs??? No thanks.

mrchub- I hear that I have Lightscribed a couple of Disc Just to try out the process ! And Although they came well ! as you said it's still a Monochrome image anyway you slice it ! And if your going for a more Commercial/proffesional look like your Original Pressed DVD's . Color printing is the way to go no doubt about it ! Lightscribe could be interesting for some projects if your going for a vintage Tintype picture kinda look IMHO anyways ! Me I'm still sharpie -penning atleast for now ! Good luck & happy Burning mrchub! & Everyone Ciao!!!!

Not that I've been looking, but I haven't seen any full hub lightscribe media either.

All the ways I print my backups, here's how I rate them for quality looking covers:

1)Taiyo Yuden Watershield on the left, full hub matte on the right. The watershield looks better than the original. The pic doesn't show the true quality of that watershield cover for Species.

Watershields will give you the best quality inkjet printable cover, nothing would come close unless it was a glossy thermal. Well worth the 65 cents each for my last purchase.

Drawback: Dash format only.

2) Full hub Shiny inkjet printable. Haven't been around long. The reg hubs looked great, just lacked the extra printable surface vs the full hub.

3) Lightscribe. It gives a distinctive look to the backups.
Drawbacks:Reg Hub and Drive will wear out quicker, seems like you have to update the lightscribe program to keep up with the newer LS blank media. I will no longer buy any after my remaining LS dvds and CDs run out. I'm sticking to the above 2.

4) Matte Full hub inkjet printable like Verbatim and Maxell. Easy to find locally. Darker covers look better. Lighter covers look faded.

Drawback: Not water proof.

5) Reg hubs not covered above- I don't even bother.

Again, all those pics of mine does not do the covers justice. My camera sucks. The ink was screwing up on Grid Iron gang,so the colors didn't turn out very good..

$65 for the last batch of 100 taiyo yuden watershield dvds, which is half price from what they were over a year ago.

The watershield CD's probably aren't much less than the dvds?

Epson stylus photo R200 did those prints, but I picked up a backup R-300 because of those models are no longer made. Ebay is about the only place to get them, but be careful.

I did a google the other week and a few sites had remanufactured printers, but only $280 and higher.Double the price from what they were 2 years ago.

The biggest asset to those models: R200/220/300/320/and 340, is the incredible Ink savings on generic ink. Last 2 batches, only $10 for all 6 ink carts. Over $80 for all 6 ink carts if buying at staples, wallyworld, etc. Also bulk tanks available for the serious users.

Edit: Here's my latest cover:

Well I just bought the Epson RX680 & it prints on CD's/DVD's!! Thought I'd never buy Epson again after I tried an R200 series (I forget which one) & the print tray quit feeding after several discs. Took it back & got a refund.

Not so with this new RX680 printer. The CD tray works great every time with no loading errors after about 20 discs. Oh & one more thing it prints directly to a disc with Acoustica label maker where the other 200 series wouldn't do it at all. I'm thrilled with the ability to finally print on the media I just burned. 150 DVD's & about 200 CD's left for the sharpie then it's 100% silver or white inkjet printable media for me....

I think they had that model on sale the other week at staple's.

How much for ink?

The tray feed sucks on my R-300,just a hair better than my R-200 but I'll have to deal with it. Long dry spells between printable covers doesn't help any.

The RX 680 printer cost me $199 plus shipping from Bestbuy Online. Was delivered by UPS in 5 days from purchase. Would have been nice to see it in a store but it was an online only deal so I read the reviews (which were good) before I bought the printer. The RX 595 was $149 & it does CD/DVD's too. Just prints 3 pages slower than the 680 does.

I paid about $90 for a 6 pack of high capacity cartridges at the Epson site. Bought 2 of them yesterday right after I installed my printer. The regular pack is $64. For some reason Meritline charges $78 for the regular cartridge pack & the high capacity is not available there. I haven't checked any local store prices yet. Also don't know how moch of an ink hog my new printer is yet after a few pages & several test prints of unburned silver matte plus white inkjet DVD's on the text plus graphics aetting which looks good enough for me. Silver matte is darker than white inkjet from what I've found. I'm sure the ones who say the printer they use is an ink hog use it on photo or max photo settings which would use quite a bit of ink.

Mine has 2 feed trays and I don't use the bottom one at all. Just let it feed paper from the back. Am I happy with this printer? You bet!!
