my friend now wants to play brawl after seeing that I got it working. He's going to get his wii modded with the d2c chip. He has wii version 3.0U, should he update now (before getting the mod chip) or after he gets the d2c chip or does it matter at all?

Update asap - shouldn't matter but only if it's done online - really just try and stay up to date with Wii firmware.
