Toshiba dropping HD DVD?

article published on 15 February, 2008

Media and analysts have speculated the future of HD DVD frequently since Warner turned Blu. During the last couple of weeks the emphasis of speculations has been on when HD DVD will lose, rather than will it lose the war. The most recent turn-ups were when Netflix and Best Buy announced support for Blu-ray, and Toshiba's reply to those was considered by some to be the last breath. According ... [ read the full article ]

I'm talking about the original Hollywood Reporter article:

the company ran an ad during the Super Bowl -- a 30-second spot that reportedly cost $2.7 million.
If you have a source that gives the actual dollar amount that Toshiba paid for the ad then I'd appreciate it if you'd share it with us - preferably from an official Toshiba spokesperson.

2. Best Buy did NOT go BluRay exclusive. They are going to direct customers in BR's direction, but they are not dropping HD-DVD players or discs.
Directing customers to a certain product rather than towards a competitor - for me at least - is just as good as exclusive support.

Ok, so you'll trust a tech writer with NO sourcing, yet I have to provide sourcing FROM A TOSHIBA SPOKESPERSON?

See, that's what I'm talking about, selective acknowledgment of information is becoming a norm for the tech news "blogosphere". Afterdawn does a pretty good job of sourcing, but so many others are just drifting into shaky ground, really.

I'll let that comment stand for itself.

Wal-Mart puts stake through HD DVD's heart

Quote:Things have gone from bad to worse for HD DVD in the space of one week.

Wal-Mart announced Friday morning that it, too, has chosen a side in the battle for high-definition video supremacy: by June it will only stock Blu-ray Disc players.

(Credit: Crave UK)A buyer in Wal-Mart's video division wrote this morning on her Wal-Mart Checkout blog that the retail giant had made the decision following Netflix and Best Buy's high-profile announcements that they will exclusively stock Blu-ray products.

Wrote Susan Chronister of Wal-Mart: "By June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard-def movies, DVD players, and up-convert players."

"So," she continues, not mincing words, "if you bought the HD (DVD) player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard-def movies, and make space for a BD player..."

That might be the best option at this point, as the dominoes keep falling in Blu-ray's favor. While Netflix and Best Buy were pretty damning evidence that the end was near, now it's glaringly obvious: it's over for HD DVD. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean that consumers will automatically start buying Blu-ray players. As mentioned many times before here, prices will have to continue to fall on both Blu-ray players and packaged media for there to be any sort of mainstream adoption of the format.

There are rumors that Toshiba might soon be declaring defeat: The Hollywood Reporter has sources telling it that Toshiba, the main backer of the HD DVD, might drop its allegiance with the format in the next few weeks.

Toshiba denies it, but stay tuned. There's likely much more to come in this drama.

Damm what happen to those cheap chinese HD-DVD players that was going to flood the market & give HD-DVD the upper hand ? Did they make it to the shore yet ?

.....and a Walmart blog?!
Please.

Wal-Mart on Blu-ray bandwagon
Retailer will only sell Sony's hi-def movie discs, phasing out Toshiba's HD-DVD discs in its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores this year.
February 15 2008: 11:28 AM EST

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- National discount retailer Wal-Mart announced Friday that it had decided to only sell Sony's Blu-ray hi-definition movie discs, and will phase out Toshiba's competing HD-DVD formatted discs over the next several months.

Wal-Mart said that by June, its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores would sell only Blu-ray discs and Blu-ray hardware players. Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD format are not compatible.

"We've listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases," said Gary Severson, Wal-Mart's Senior Vice President of Home Entertainment in a statement.

That's the official statement from Walmart's Senior VP for Home Entertainment.

leave it to Afterdawn to blow sunshine up people's ass and skew the truth...........................

NOTHING in that commercial even hinted towards HD-DVD players being "better DVD players rather than the next-gen system". This just pisses me off when people's brains shut down and decide to re-interpret what it wants to hear and EVEN WORSE............what it wants OTHERS to hear.

Can you say............."Afterdawn is WAAAAAYYY pro Blu-ray"?

"Even your current DVD collection looks great" quote-unquote.

GET IT RIGHT AD!!!

If they weren't supposedly in "Finland", I'd say they're Republican for no apparent reason and if Hitler was a Repub..........THEY"D VOTE FOR HIM.

Walmart.

Another post-dated cheque in the mail for Blu-ray.

LMAO

They are not happy bunnies actually.

Yesterday was supposed to be the end of this and a St Valentines day massacre of HD DVD.

It came to nothing but a handful of the stories they were going to spread have made it out.

The Hollywood reporter tale, the Toshiba Blu-ray player tale & the current Walmart tale.

All looking pretty thin when examined cos Universal & Paramount would not play ball with Sony & the BDA.

Next up will come the HD DVD moves and we will all see just how empty & unreliable post-dated cheques & promises really are.

There's lots of time between now & June for things to change enormously.

Defectors May Push Toshiba Out of HD-DVD Format

Defeat Does Not Mean Success

Michael Gartenberg, an analyst with industry research firm JupiterResearch, said the Warner announcement -- during the all-important Consumer Electronics Show in January -- was a "body blow" to HD DVD. It was always about content, he said, and the content is moving away from that format.

While the war has been raging, some alternatives for viewing better-quality movies have emerged. There are upscaling, regular DVD players, which offer a stepped-up picture and have become very inexpensive. There is also delivery of high-def over high-speed Internet connections. At January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Comcast demonstrated technology that permits a high-def movie to be downloaded in four minutes.

Gartenberg cautioned that "defeating HD DVD does not necessarily mean that Blu-ray succeeds." He added that the main competition for each format has always been upscaling DVDs and online delivery, and he noted that consumers are now able to watch a high-def movie over Apple TV "within two or three minutes of when it is purchased."

For Blu-ray to succeed, Gartenberg said, it "has to get the price of players down" to the levels we're now seeing for discounted HD-DVD players. Those prices have been dropping rapidly, as low as $120 to $200 less than the cheapest Blu-ray player.

"If Blu-ray doesn't catch on in 2008," he predicted, "it may remain only a niche format."

Blu-Ray profile 1.1, 1.3 and 2.0. = unfinished format = BRICKS!!!

Well it's about time!! Took you THAT long to sniff out the packets and scan through the logs to determine. Still haven't done anything wrong and keep getting banned for lame reasons. Excluding this one...........I have PLENTY O IPs to use to create accounts. I love AD........and I love commenting on AD...........and, to be frank............I think people love having me comment. As long as I'm not to harsh on them and their opinions.

Dual format players are going to be the standard. Blu-ray will maintain dominance and HD-DVD will be making cashola steadily (but far behind).
Everybody better prepare to buy yourself a dual player because movies like Transformers and HD-DVD exclusives will NEVER come out on BD. Have a great weekend all.

I don't understand the *nal nature of these moderators. Why they don't like this one person. Yea maby he broke some rule or something at one time. Hell we all break some kind of rule/Rules in our daily life. No matter how small it is. It is still breaking a rule. Hell I've broken so many rules that it isn't even funny. I do it every day. Whether it be a stupid rule about something even dumber or a law that can cause me to go to jail or pay a large fine. I just believe in following rules that benefit others but not me. Or rules that are there just because someone wants them. Those are the ones I break the most. Yea maby he said some degrading comment to someone or put something in a post that wasn't well liked. But did he really do something so bad that it warrants his expulsion. Well in someones eyes it does. I've been a member for a couple of years now I think. This is only the second post that I've made. But have done a lot of reading.I never seen a post so degrading or vulgar that warranted this but then again. It all depends on the feeling of the "officer" on that day as to if he/she wants to deal with something so small.

That's exactly what I meant. And I forgot that there was two posts in that other thread. Let me rephrase that. This is only the second thread that I have posted in. What a word are you talking about? The only one I can see is *nal. What is so bad about that. Afraid of offending someone? I also don't know how to edit a post. I understand that this site is seen by millions. But to be afraid of offending one culture while another looks at it as harmless. THAT I believe is one of the biggest problems with this world society as a whole. The fear of offending someone somewhere. Whether it be in your own neighborhood or on some island thousands of miles/kilometers away.

Toshiba don't jump the ship yet, stand behind your quality product and give us hope you've got the balls to take on Sony.

Why would they 'hang in there'? I don't understand why HD DVD users keep saying that! There not going to hang in there just to keep a few people happy (whilst losing millions of dollars). just accept defeat already.

The most telling comment in that article is found in the last paragraph:
Quote:
As Toshiba has been accustomed to say, the high-definition disc sales compared to DVD sales is just a drop in the ocean.

Where I live, the number of HD channels available on my cable provider has remained unchanged for going on two years now. Debating over which high-def DVD format will win the war is a pointless debate when the number of high-def cable subscribers doesn't warrant an increase in channel selection. I'm not going to spend four figures on a television set for the dubious privelege of seeing 18 more channels out of 300. And if others feel the same way, it doesn't bode well for the HD format itself ... much less a high-def DVD format. Perhaps high-def DVD sales are a "drop in the bucket" for a REASON.

I've checked and checked and checked for the so-called "a word". What are you talking about and how fair is it that you are being such a edited by ddp to 'defgod' reprimanding him for saying something he didn't say or that you're mistaken about? Now he's gonna get a ban because you've told him to correct a word that he or no one else would have any idea what word you're referring to and why and ....................this just makes no sense.........YOU make no sense and you're coming off as a Nazi. Why don't you just be a big boy and admit you're irrational and barking for no reason because someone voiced an opinion at your irrationality towards another commenter. It's ok........no one will be mad you you for admitting you're wrong.
