question about Verbatim DL DVD Disc

My DL DVD burner is older and only capable of burning at 2.4x
I have some older Memorex DL DVD's that are only rated at 2.4X and will burn fine.
I bought some new Verbatim DL DVD rated at 8x but they will not burn on my 2.4x burner. I get an error ever time I try. Says the burner can not gain complete access or something like that.
Is this a DVD driver/update problem or is it simply that the 8x DL DVD's will not work on the slower 2.4x burner.
The burner, burns all other formats (Regular DVD's, CD's you name it) but not the 8x DL DVD's from Verbatim.

Im starting to believe that you are right, My problem is with my old drive, it will not read the 8x disc, does fine with the 2.4x...
I always thought that regardless of the speed of the disc, 8x 6x 4x 2.4x, the burner would always read the disc at its max rated capacity. Seems that the Philips 8631 will on read disc that are specific to its max speed...
Ill go and check them out...

Yeah Beach, had a similiar issue and so just spent $60 on a new one and never a problem with making backups. What i would do definitely.

Try getting the newest firmware for you particular drive. Updating the burner's firmware usually helps. If all else fails. buy yourself a new Pioneer (You can't go wrong with that one) DL burner.

He doesn't need to get ripped off buying the Pioneer when any of them will work.

I would agree, the first thing i would try is getting the most up to date firmware. It can sometimes sort out a lot of media compatibility issues.

If that does not work then look into a new burner. Personally i am a fan of BenQ and you can get a good DL burner for about $40 at most online stores that sell them. If you do decide on BenQ make sure that the model supports the Q-Suite 2.0 software that is very useful.
Pioneer, NEC, and Samsung all make good drives. I would avaoid Plextor and Sony. Sony only because they outsource so until you have actually bought and researched you you will not know who actually made the drive. I had a DRU-700A (which was a Lite-On) and it only lasted about 2 years before it gave out.

Why would you say he would get ripped off? I paid $60 for my Pioneer 3 years ago with thousands of successful burns and still growing strong. I in no way feel ripped off. But have gotten every penny's worth 100 times over.

No offense man, just to many people (not you) make it seem like ONLY the Pioneer will work in burning DL DVDs when almost any newer one can.

heck, my pioneer 111d only lasted about umm...a year before it started burning crappy copies. now i have a samsung burner that has NEVER burned a coaster for 360s, movies, applications, anything.

My point exactly. My Pioneer receiver died after a year too, overrated.
