I've had the drive for a week, backed up the latest games fine, because the cd's are still clean, the issue is when i backup my old games, it has a light scratch, plays fine on the system.

When I do the read/rip from the Samsung Kreon drive, at about 4%-30% into the game, depending on the games I try to backup, I always get the error message "cannot be read" and/or "fill in sector w/zeros" to go on with the ripping.

Is this a common issue, anyone else experience this?? any tips?

I'm using the latest Kreon Firmware which is 1.0 and XBox Backup Creator 2.8.

It's normal man, if you have a deep scratch on your disk, it probably won't work. It's not bc the Samsung sux or anything, it's just the nature of copying these type of video game DVDs. I wouldn't ever bag on the Samsung, it's AWESOME that you can use a drive to rip a game, what other drive will do that. I've made like 150 backups and maybe like 15 games haven't worked, and every single one of them have had deep scratches. You can try to clean the disk off, but in my case, it doesn't help. I noticed that if the error message is after 80% or so, then u can fill in with zeroes and it will work. Before that, probably won't work and wouldn't waste a Verbatim on it.

I had the same problem with call of duty 4, it got to 31% read and stopped. Tried everything from using different programs to slower speeds to no avail. My solution since I owned an original was to borrow a friends and used it to back it up.
