Hey guys, ok i bought a Wii like a month ago . Its a NTSC (USA) Wii. The guy whom i bought it from said that it is soft-modded as in no MODCHIP installed. It was kinda hard to believe then but anyway i didnt care and kept playing original games and also backup/copied games on it. Now, yesterday i happen to connect the Wii to the internet and it asked for an update and so i did.
After the update, all original games are working but backup/copied DVD's are not :( the disc channel says "Unable to read disc".

My question :

Is there Anyway to know which modchip/softmod my Wii is using? so that i can further follow up on this issue of "update and die"

Waiting for a reply. Thanks!

I really dont think it was a softmod. It would be easier to see which mod u have if you could play backups. Then you could try the config discs for each mod, and if it loaded, that was the mod.

Or you might have a really sucky first softmod. But i have never heard of wii softmod.

I have never heard of a Softmod either. I would be getting in touch with the guy you bought the Wii from and ask again. Tell him your having issues. This is why members should do research before buying some sort of Modded gaming system. Plus know for sure what is in it before purchasing it.

There has to be some sort of Mod in the Wii if you played backups before. But I haven't ever heard of a Wii update that has stopped all Wii backups from working.

So if you need or help we really need to know what Modchip you have in your Wii. Either contact the guy you bought it from or buy a tri-wing driver and open up the Wii and take a picture of the Modchip and post it. That is really the only way we will be able to help.

crack it open bro. There is NO such thing as a wii softmod. I promise, this is not a guess. You're gunna have to open up the system to know what mod you have.

Also, i believe that i have seen the same modchip back in the PSONE days...maybe its the same one?? nothing written on it either.

if its a very small chip, odds are its "WiiFree" firmware coded on a generic PIC12F629.

Since that firmset can be put on any PIC12F629 chip, there is a good chance that the chip it self is blank with out anything printed on it.

hey sorry for the late reply..Yes Oraseth you were right it is the 12F629 chip :D but the funny thing is its just hanging there i mean it isnt solded on any PCB or anything, its just the small chip (covered in paper tape) with wires coming out if its legs to different points on the Wii board.

Now question remains, which MOD am i using? and how to update it? i did some search on the net and i came with openwii and yaosm thing but i got confused as it needed some programmer or something. Isnt there any bootdisc available or somewhat an easy way to find out the exact mod and version iam using?

Thanks once again!

Wiifree is supported by YAOSM and a programmer is needed to flash the latest version which is currently 3.0. Updates dealing with game protection can be done using DVD on this version but that's all. If the chip was at 3.0 then a DVD update would possibly solve your issue. If it's not then you need a programmer. I doubt it's at 3.0 but you never know. The guy who sold this to you has deliberately lied to get rid btw.

More info is available in the official forum here but this site was wiped recently and they are in the process of rebuilding.

heyy ok so i just downloaded the config disc for YAOSM 3.0 which i doubt it is cause 3.0 was released just a few days back i believe?
if it doesnt work i guess i'll build a programmer then. Also can you tell me how many YASOM's are there? i mean if this config disc for 3.0 doesnt work maybe i can try other ? i know i still might not be upgrade it to the latest if its older than 3.0 but still just to know which exactly is the version iam using.

You sound capable with electronics... why waste time, effort and money building the programmer.

Might be easier to purchase the Wasabi or Infectus chip next week and put it in and start playing backups again.
