Think about it, when the Xbox360 came out there was already a format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

At the time I think they were pretty even but we all knew only one would emerge as the winning format, so Microsoft just stuck with what was guaranteed to work, the Plain old DVD. They were supporters of the HD-DVD so they released that as an add-on for anyone that wanted to watch HD-Dvd movies on their 360. Now that the Format war is *officially* over, Microsoft can actually release a blu-ray add-on for the 360 and market more of those. So for the poor people that bought Hd-dvd adapters can spend only 199 and get a blu-ray player also.

Giving Microsoft even more money.

I am an avid PS3 fan, but I give my hats of to Microsoft for this one.

They definitely did. They knew they wanted to promote the digital downloading and didn't really care so much for HD DVD. They could have bought the forwat war victory like Sony did by buying all the studios' support, but they didn't. I would have been pissed if I bought the 360 and it cost more bc of the built in in HD DVD, glad it was add-on. On the subject, Microsoft was smart rushing the 360 to the market to get a year head start on the PS3 and knowing it was obviously defective.

Rushed or not all of the next gen consoles have their defects. The problem is that we as consumers keep on buying them even though we know this. Any first run console will have problems to deal with. But what MS did do was get a jump on the sales of everyone who wanted that first next gen console, and on the game production so they could have a much better selection of titles out for their system.

I have owned plenty of both the Sony and MS consoles and really my preference goes to the Xbox but ONLY because of the original Xbox and the amount of amazing things that you could do with it after a simple softmod process.

You could get the PS2 to do a lot of the same things but it took much more effort and more programs to accomplish it. After a while i just gave my modded PStwo away to a friend who would get some good use out of it. He was excited knowing that it had a good modchip, 250GB hard drive, HD Combo case, and about 300 games that came with it.

Did you know that the PS3 was suppose to be launched around the same time as the 360? It was problems with laser production which held them back for a year. Can you imagine what the numbers would be like if it wasn't delayed? MS would have had to address the overheating issue right away instead of dragging their feet. But because there was no competition for the 360, they left it alone. It's piss-poor hardware but MS knew a lot of consumers wanted next-gen gaming.

Worked for MS this time around.

In all reality though, this has been a good lesson for MS and Sony. The consumers showed that even if the hardware and it's options were lacking, it's the available games that mattered. People wanted to play games and do it cheaply. MS gave it to them. Sony put out an awesome machine and they believed cost wouldn't matter to consumers when they seen what options were included. But that backfired badly. Now that they're cutting it's price (unfortunately it's options also) it's sales are picking up nicely. There's no doubt that '08 should be good for the PS3.

Exactly! glad there are people out there that agree with me :P

I wonder if Microsoft is gonna buy the HD-DVD format out and use it solely for games or anything like that?

could be a neat idea for them,

I highly doubt MS would change the media preference for games on the 360 now. There's too many consoles out there now which won't play hddvd/bluray. But it's almost guaranteed for their next console.

Re Bhetrick

WOW, did not know that, things would definitely be different now if PS3 had launched at the same time. I saw where the PS3 beat the 360 sales last month, so hopefully MS will do what it can do to keep people buying the 360 and stuff. I tell you, the day that Sony uses that huge full 54 GB Blu Ray disk for games, whereas our DL disks only hold over 7 GB, they will kill us for sure, the games will be lifelike I bet. Then of course MS will intro the next game console with the Blu Ray drive, while PS3 will still be going strong. I am definitely an Xbox fan, just didnt like how they stopped making games for the Xbox, whereas Sony still had games coming out for the PS2. It just kinda seemed like an "FU buy our new 360" to all the Xbox owners.

Exactly man, crap like that breeds loyalty to the PS, they did Xbox people wrong not still making the Xbox games, but oh well.

yeah seriously, all the new games are still coming out for PS2, but the Xbox 1 and Gamecbue have officially died, Sony's lucky they're still making money with people still buying PS2's, due to the PS3's problems so far.
