I've finally ordered a TOOL battery and 4GB Sony Memory stick Pro Duo which will be delivered tomorrow, ready to downgrade and install the custom M33 Firmware. I got both for about £43, which i thought was quite a good deal.

I have been reading the stickied threads re downgrades, and i plan to use THIS guide to downgrade my Slim and Lite PSP, currently on 3.80 Official Firmware. Is this the right thread to use to downgrade to 1.50 AND update to the M33 firmware?
when reading the thread, it says that any memory stick UNDER 4gb can be used to make the Magic Memory Stick, so i assume that the 4gb i have ordered will not work. I do however have a 1gb M2 memory stick that i use in my phone, which came with an adaptor to use in a PC memory card reader. I have used this memory card in my PSP before, and it works for game save and playing movies etc. Would i be able to use this memory stick for the MMS, or do i need to buy a smaller Pro Duo Stick, or could i even use my 4gb stick when it is delivered?

Thanks for your help,
IBIZAGTI

yes the right guide

I would try the 4gb first as i don't think the M2 card will work.
If the 4gb doesn't work 512 are cheap.

Thats brilliant, thanks for the quick reply!

Another question...my PSP is quite new (only got it for christmas). Will downgrading the running custom firmware void my warrenty, or will the warrenty be intact as i wont be opening the PSP up? Also, if anything does go wrong with it can i reinstall the Official firmware?

Thanks again,

everything will be fine. CFW doesn't void the warranty. Why would you want to go back to OFW when you have pandoras. It'll fix most anything^-^

I was just thinking incase i do need to send it back to SONY, i would need to have OFW on it, but hopefully i wont need to send it back anyway.

On another note, i ordered my TOOL battery through amazon, HERE. i was told that this would work on my SLIM and LITE PSP, although the battery cover would not fit on, is that correct?
I also noticed a different battery from Datel..the HOT WIRE battery (HERE). Is this the same as the normal TOOL battery?

Thanks,

I had seen that before, but couldn't find any reviews if people saying how well they worked, so I thought that I might as well just buy the new battery, then I've got it ready for if I ever need it again.

Thats great, just what i wanted to hear :-). That means i can make the MMS today, and just have to charge the battery and plug it in when it comes tomorrow!

Also, when i have installed the custom firmware, i will hopefully be using it to play backups of my games (I will only be playing backups of games i have actually bought, as i do not like playing pirated game - i want to install the custom firmware only so that i do not have to carry round a pocket full of UMD's). I have been thinking about this, and i think it will be easier for me to download the backups rather than try to rip them myself. After looking on torrent sites like ISOHUNT, it seems most of the games are in .rar format, and range from about 120mb to 1.4gb. Is it likely to be safe to download from these sources, as i really dont want to download any virus' etc to my PSP. Is there a way that i can check the games are safe before running them? Will a PC virus scanner pick up any PSP virus'?

PLEASE NOTE: I am NOT looking for links to any sites offering pirated material, as i know this is against site rules. Also, as stated above, i will not be downloading any games i do not own.

Thanks,

custom firmware comes with a umd ripper so you can rip your own games.
I personally like gamestorrents.com ahem for the back-ups you have.

Ok Thanks.

I started to download Medal of Honour Heroes 2 (which i already have on UMD) so that as soon as i install the firmware i can start playing straight away. Only question i have is how do i install the game onto the memory card? I assume that when i put the Memory card into the PSP and format it (after CFW has been installed) it will add the GAME, MUSIC folders etc onto the memory card.
The game i have downloaded is in files with names of b-mohh2e.r00 through to b-mohh2e.r14, and a file named b-mohh2e.rar whereas i was expecting to get an ISO file which i could copy onto the ISO folder of the memory stick.
So, how do i get the game installed and ready to play from the memory stick?

Sorry for all the questions, i really want to get this right first time!

Thanks,

I think i have sorted out the .rar problem...there was one file that did not have a number, so i extrated that one, and it gave me a iso image...hope i did it right, just have to wait 'till the TOOL battery arrives to find out!

Hey hold on, you don't downgrade to 1.50 and then to Custom Firmware.

You can create a magic memory stick using the totalnoobeasyinstaller, put it into your slim psp, insert the Datel tool and press X. The wifi and memory stick lights should flash vigorously, and then after a few minutes the PSP should turn off. Then take the datel tool out and turn on your PSP using your original battery or your charger cable and thats it, you will be on custom firmware.

By any chance did you buy your Datel tool from Amazon UK? I got it for £12.. The memory sticks on amazon were mostly fake as 4gb's were going for £15 so I decided to buy from amazon directly instead of a seller and amazon charged me £30 for a real 4gb memory stick.

Yup, thats exactley what i bought from amazon.co.uk too :)

I used the guide HERE to create the MMS, and will use the TOOL battery with it.

The battery was delivered about 10 mins ago, but it says it needs to be charged for an hour first, so im just doing that! One question though...when the battery is charged, do i insert it into the PSP THEN put the MMS in, or have the MMS in to start with, then insert the battery???

Thanks for the help,

Well, i charged the battery for an hour, and the move to CFW was successful!!!
I am now on 3.71 M33, and playing my backups from my memory card!!

I noticed in the guide that 3.71 M33 isn't the most up-to date Firmware, as there is now 3.80 and even 3.90. is it worth upgrading to a newer firmware than i already have, or should i stick at 3.71 M33 for now? The reason i ask is that i have seen several threads with people asking if they can go back to 3.71 from the newer versions.

Thanks for all the help, and also to the creator of the guide i used :).

I'm glad its working for you :). I suggest leaving the current firmware aws it supports most applications whereas the newer firmwares do not. This is only a suggestion though, it is entirely up to you.

Everything except dead pixels! I bought a PSP with firmware 2.60 a while back, turned it on, it had a dead pixel. It was this big dark aquare on my screen. Luckily, the Best Buy salesman told me about many people having the dead pixel problem and suggesting I should buy the warranty. Good thing he told me, other wise I would always have a big dark square on my screen. I returned the PSP for another one and got a PSP with firmware 2.71, which was later downgraded and upgraded to custom firmware.

My PSP Firmware History: 2.60 had to return the PSP because it had a dead pixel > new PSP had firmware 2.71 > 1.5 > 3.52 M33 > 3.52 M33-4 > 3.71 M33 > 3.71 M33 with 1.50 kernel
