Paramount becomes final studio to move to Blu-ray

Paramount has announced that it has become the final major studio to move to Blu-ray, after it had been HD DVD exclusive since last August.
"We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," the studio said in a statement.

Since when has any of this little format war been about the "best interest of the consumer." ?
It's been a stategy game with corporate powers that be, completely denying consumer input.

sorry but that sounds like a silly comment from an HD-DVD fan - what else were Paramount going to do ? Refuse to release High Definition discs altogether ? you don't buy distributors out when there is only one product left to distribute.
and remember it was HD-DVD who outbid and bought out Payamount last august to go HD-DVD exclusive.

According to a Hollywood insider the likely reason why Paramount was the last to switch:
Lawers took some time to figure out how much of that $150M payout they had to return to Toshiba.

I am a high def fan, but I do not own either formats. I believe the true winner will be ultra def and not BD. Upconverted DVD is good enough for me and I 4 one do not wish to repurchase my movie collection just yet.

I own both and had no preference; I have no preference because it will all be replaced with something else.
I'm certainly not going to operate under the assumption that the winner of this squirmish is going be king of formats for generations to come.
Hell, my son is still confused as to what a VHS is. So far as he knows, it's the box under the HD Dvd player (next to the PS3) that a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich would fit nicely in to.

Yes we didnt get to report on it when it was fresh but Universal moved to Blu-ray the same day Toshiba confirmed dropping the format :)

Wow! So many things switched at once, that I couldn't follow all of it. I guess it doesn't matter anyway. The war is over, and I have a $400 upconverting DVD player. I hope that I at least still get the free movies that I was suppose to get.
By the way, Tiger Direct had a sale on a 1080i Toshiba HDDVD player w/ 7 movies for $89 if anyone was wanting to cash in on Toshiba's misfortune.

LOL Rectangle DVDs were awesome! Before DVD burners, that was the only way to make a "backup" of up to three 2-hour DVDs to loan to a friend heh-heh! ;-)
