I'm a newbie, sort of, been playing with my new DVD burner for a few days now. I've been reading forums, guides, etc like crazy.

(1) I downloaded 1CLICK DVD Copy from LG software to test with. I took my SEABISCUIT dvd I got for Christmas and did a backup. It backed up the entire movie plus menu and extras and plays in my DVD player at home perfectly. So, I decided to try some of the other stuff before I bought.

(2) I downloaded DVD2One and CopytoDVD. I put in my Gone in 60 Seconds CD, used DVD2One and told it to copy the entire movie using variable compression and put the files on my hard drive since I havn't purchased any more blank DVD-R's. The files are on my hard drive stored at 4.7gig and I can use WinDVD or Microsoft Media Player to play the movie perfectly.

Here's my question. I keep seeing everyone talking about using DVD Decrypter to rip the files then using DVD2One to compress them, then using CopytoDVD to burn it back. Why do I need to use DVD Decrypter when DVD2One seemed to perfectly pull the files off of the DVD and put them on my HD?

Thanks,
TC

Well you will Notice Like a 500% Speed Improovement if you Rip the DVD to your Hard drive First and useing DVD2One to compress the DVD directly from the Disk is a Good way to Wear out your DVD Drive in a hurry and there is a Greater Chance of Corruption when compressing directly from the DVD disk...

DVD2ONE does not remove the encryption (DeCSS).....

Most commercial dvd's contain CSS encryption.......therefore a 'ripper' is required to remove the encryption....

Your original dvd may not have encyption....so therefore you were able to pull off the info directly from the disc......

Try and do it with a commercial movie.....you should see it bomb out with errors......

That is why you need to use a ripper......

Dvd Decrypter
Smartripper
Dvd Shrink

These are all suitable ripping packages.......I use DVD Decrypter.......

Dvd Shrink can compress/strip/re-author aswell and has been proven to be a good method to use.

Have a look at http://www.chrismccann.co.uk for some useful pointers on using DVD Shrink......

Thanks for the reply guys. I realize why I was able to use DVD2One to backup my commercial movies. I had downloaded a little app called DVD43 and that was what was allowing me to make it work. I've done Seabiscuit, Finding Nemo, Shrek, Gone in 60 Seconds and Any Given Sunday and they all play back perfectly on my pc. I havn't tried burning any of them except Seabiscuit yet and it worked perfect.

I didn't realize that DVD2One would wear out my DVD player though. Thanks for the tip on that.
