I've been thinking about it, and I thought to myself, doesn't it have the ability to do all these cool things? I thought to myself it can't be THAT hard to do, surely there will be some walkthroughs that will make plenty of sense, and it'll be relatively painless. I mean all I want is to be able to play PSP backups, play with some emulators, listen to music, watch movies, and just generally mess around with the thing.

Then, I looked around about how to do it... and I thought, well, they're just confusing, I'll find somewhere else. Still confusing, now I need another PSP, another battery, I might brick it, but then if I do I need to do this, and I have to downgrade to this, to upgrade to this, I won't have access to the new things the PSP can do, or this may not work, and it doesn't work with slims, and can I get a PSP with 1.5 already on it, and blah blah blah blah, ALL DAY LONG I LOOKED. ALL DAY LONG I LOOKED AT THESE WALKTHROUGHS THESE EXPLANATIONS, BUT THEY ONLY MADE ME MORE CONFUSED! MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE!

Please, in a clear, step by step by step manner please tell me what I need to do, from getting the system, to things I need to buy in addition, to what I have to install and how to do it IN THE SIMPLEST POSSIBLE MANNER. I want to be able to understand what I am doing before I buy the thing. I don't want to get one, and then I can't do what I want with it. I want to know exactly what I have to do, in PLAIN ENGLISH, assume I am a MORON, as I kind of am for things at this level, before I get it. That way I'm not flailing around asking for help every step of the way, and having to stop and go get something, and blah blah blah.

Just please, make it simple for me? Can that be done? Please? I'm about to start throwing things. I honestly spent all day trying to understand, and I'm not one bit closer to understanding anything to do with anything. I don't want a link to a walkthrough, trust me I've read them, they only confused me. I want it in simple terms for someone that doesn't even have one yet what I have to do to get it to do what I want, which isn't much really. If you want to get on an instant messenger and talk with me to make it easier, that's okay too, I can do that. Just, please, be nice, I've had a long day... =(

dont worry its all simple when you get your head round it 0_<

right here the low down on the different things that you need to do is you get one

1) fat psp (first one) are very good for homebrew because the support the 1.50 update unlike the slim

2) the slim can support it with a special program but if your just getting into it and its all confusing dont worry about this part

3)your looking into custom firmware which is a mix of the new firmware and the old firmware you can get cfw for the slim as well which only has the new fw with bit removed to make it run hombrew.

4)iso game and cso game (backups) are very simple to use if you have the correct cfw all you need to do is make a folder call iso in the root (the first stage when you open it up with windows explorer) of your memory stick. you put your games in there and the you just run them form your memory stick (if you have no-UMD turned off then you need a umd in the drive to play them)

5)the slim will do everything that you want to do above so i would suggest getting a slim. if your going to get one off ebay there are ones with cfw already installed so you dont have to muck about with pandoras battery, just search psp slim m33 into ebay.

6)bricking your psp is not a good thing it means that you will have to use pandoras battery to unbrick it. but you only get a brick when you are playing around with the flash0 (where the operating system is stored) like changing themes, updating and you turn it off e.t.c
but if you read the readme when doing something you should not get a brick

hope that help make things a bit clearer if you need any more information please post back
the problem is that there is so much you can do with this console its hard to explain sometimes. 0_<

THE EASIEST WAY TO START
If you bought a PSP and datel tool battery with a 512Mb/1Gb official Sony pro duo memory stick and followed this guide (yeah I know you don't want a link to a guide you tried to read and understand but tough).

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/610313

then you could do what you want - though you will prolly still want to upgrade the custom firmware to the latest - this can be done at a later stage and is relatively easy. You will also prolly want to buy a 4GB pro duo stick for better storage.

THE LONG HAUL
Expecting to understand "overnight" what is taking place and having it all stuck in your brain so you feel confident and knowledgeable ain't gonna happen - especially if you haven't even got a PSP to work with. I've been modding PSPs for 2 years and sometimes the process is complicated but I put my trust in the methods posted by others, especially if I don't understand.

There isn't a one stop solution so you can exploit your PSP to the full. I stream movies & music from my server, access and control my PC, play backup games, run emulators to play games from older systems, watch youtube and other stuff - none of these things come without some messing about.

OK, so hypothetically, I go into Wal-Mart right now and get a PSP right off the shelf, order the slim tool battery from Datel (which is basically a Pandora Battery already?), get a 512/1GB Sony Pro Duo Memory stick (to turn into the "Magic" Memory Stick", do that guide to make it, it's going to tell me how to do everything properly?

Then what do I do next? Once this custom firmware is installed I don't need the battery or the stick again unless it bricks?

I think I'm this close to understanding something, don't fail me now!

Yeah that covers it. Keep the battery & magic stick in case you ever have a problem or brick. But also like I say I'd get a 4Gb stick if you wanna play psp backups or store media & data etc. It's not essential but you'll not get much done without at the very least a 2Gb.

Ask Qs if you have problems or if you dunno where to go with it once you have a CFW PSP.

also if you want to play back ups buy a 4gb stick and also a 512mb stick for the pandoras battery because 4gb+ sticks dont work as a magic mem stick 0_<
