I think you will run into the problem of not having a new battery that can be Hard Moded. There is software that runs on the PSP with custom firmware that can make your battery into a Pandora. The problem is you are running Offical Firmware.
I have not seen a newer Windows Made MMS that has 3.80+ M33 firmware.
The MMS I use that has Sevral Tools and 2 Different Firmware options and the 3.9 upgrade after flash, kernel Modules and all uses most of my 512Mb stick
To the best of my Knowledge Worst thing that can happen to your mem stick is you having to format it. Other question is if you have a real MS or a fake. I know fakes have caused issues with people making MMS's
I would suggest trying to find someone close by that can help you with Flashing your battery to Pandora, and Possible use of there MMS to save you a bit of time and they would know that there MMS works.
Other option is to Pick up a new battery to hard mod (if you have a Phat you will have to cut off the plastic pegs that are on the bottom of a Slim battery) and hard mod and then you would still have your Orgional battery that you can Flash once You get Custom firmware installed. You could also Return the Battery to Best buy say it don't fit your PSP (The tabs are on the side that you remove to hard mod by the looks of things) and they will go Ohh and you can have your money back or Pick up an other MS 1 & 2 Gigs are Cheep and once you have Custom firmware you will use more space sense you won't have to carry around UMD's of the game or 3 your are playing and you would have faster Load times, and I would think some battery saveing as well.
Admityly that is not the most ethical way to do things.
