I looked in the guides all they have information for was the M3 stuff.

I had been holding off on changning firmware for fear of bricking because I hear so many people talk about it and because all game up to this point still worked with that firmware but I finally found one that won't(Patapon).

Can I go straight to the current firmware from 3.40 OE or do I need to go back to 1.50?

1. Upgradin is very easy. As long, u dont touch ur psp until it says it complete then u will never brick the psp

Actually even if you don't screw anything up there's still a chance you can brick it to my understanding.

Ok I did everything as stated and I'm updating to 3.90 but after its said Unpacking... done it got stuck at Please wait... and it won't do anything else. Its been like that for 10 minutes and I'm afraid to touch anything on it because it might brick. Is something wrong?

As long as it hasn't got to the point of formatting flash you should be ok to shut down. Restart and look for a program call key cleaner. The old oe used to patch keys and most likely the keys are missing. Run key cleaner and it should fix most of the keys.Here is a link to download. Try his newest v1.4
