Can anyone recommend me a software(s) that is good for converting and burning .avi files to dvd+rw's.

TMpegenc is an excellent program for converting many types of video files to dvd, and then you can use Nero to burn the dvd(choose dvd video from the Nero dropdown menu and then put the dvd files into the folder VIDEO_TS)
DVDDecrypter and SmartRipper are excellent ripping programs.
