I have a modded wii with a D2CKey. I just bought super smash bros brawl NTSC. The wii is asking for an update. Should I update or will this brick my wii? I haven't played any games but NTSC on my US wii.

It will be fine. Remember that as long as the game is the same region as your Wii, it is fine.
