I bought an already modded psp from someone. It looks like it has firmware 2.71 on it. There are a couple of emulators and a bunch of games already on it. He told me that if I buy a new UMD game and its of a different firmware when I put it in and it asks to update firmware, if I do this it will erase the emulators and games that are already on the psp. He said to go online and download the proper firmware to play the new UMD game instead. I can't find any information on this online. Is this true? I'm afraid to buy a new game now because I do not want to lose the emulators or old school games already on it. If I upgrade firmware online will that erase the emulators/games too? and how do I do that?

PLEASE HELP

ok first off... you said it was 2.71 right?
does it have any numbers or letters after the firmware?( when you check it in sytem information)
because you might just have a 2.71 because i think that the official 2.71 still supported some emulators...
but i can help you to upgrade your psp and yet keep you emulators...

Its me and im here...so yea thats all i wanted to say

What he meant is to upgrade ur firmware. The latest would would be 3.90 M33. Here is a guide.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/616311

When u upgrade, u will not lost ur emu or games. Instead, when u upgrade to 3.90, u have to the 1.5 add on the play emu.

Note that u need to upgrade to 3.52 M33 then to 3.90

EDIT: Josh, im guessing he has 2.71 SE. Since he says he a emu, then mostly he has a CFW.

I looked up the firmware the system has again and its actually 3.3 OEA not 2.71.

Why would I need to upgrade it?

Will I not be able to play store bought games using the version I already have without losing my emulators/games?

Also, I don't know how to go about downloading any more old games.

Sorry, I'm very new at all this but I appreciate the help.

by new games do you mean store bought games or games you get online? So if I understand correctly, new games(store bought) run under a newer firmware and I would have to upgrade mine first. And upgrading mine will not erase my emulators or games I already have stored on the memory card right?

Old games meaning my emulator games like super mario or sonic the hedgehog as I have nintendo and sega emulators.

1. What i mean by new games as in new games are bought from stores (UMD) or downloaded from the web (ISO).
2. Sony keeps tryin to make us upgrade (sowe cant play homebrew), So, Sony says that to play these games u need to upgrade ur firmware. So, every new game for psp would require a higher firmware.
3. No, it wont erase anythin. But to make sure, backup ur files.
4. If u want to download emulator games (called roms). Just use google and search for somthing like snes roms. There is a whole bunch of sites

Thanks that clears up some things for me.

But, is there a difference between upgrading the firmware when you put in a new game and it says do u want to update your firmware versus going online and updating firmware that way?

Do some upgraded firmwares not allow emulator play?

How do you back up the files? I dont know how to do this.

1. When u put in a new game it way that u must have the necessary firmware to play this game (forcing u to upgrade). However, custom firmware solves that problem. No, online games wont detect anythin.

2. Not that I know of. There could be, but 99% of all emu works for CFW. If they dont just wait for a update.

3. Go to ur PC and plug in ur USB . Copy everything to a folder on ur PC. That is how backup
