I know you've seen this before, but it's new for me, so please bear with the nuubie :) I even made the nuubie mistake of not seeing where I'm posting at first, I think I'm in the right place now.
I have a 1-month old Slim PSP (PSP-2001) with the 3.90 Firmware. And I was wondering about playing some downloaded games on it (especially FFVII) without messing the PSP up much. The last thing I wanted to do is to screw around with the firmware and ending up bricking the thing.
If 3.90 can play such a game, good, all I need to do is download it and copy it into the right directory, but if there's some additional trick that needed to be done, that's where I'm worried about.
I really want to pull this off without doing any damage to my beloved device, and any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

U need a Custom firmware, therfore u need a pandora's battery. There is only two ways of getting a pandora's battery
1. Hardmod ur battery (open ur battery)
2. Find a friend who has a CFW (some1 who can play downloaded games)
3. Buy the DATEL tool battery

There are 2 universal unbricker guides in the firmware section. One is for ppl who can get hold of a custom firmware psp to help them perform the operation and the other is for ppl who can't and need to buy a service battery (Datel Tool).

Being afraid to go for it is the worst problem you have as that will make you nervous and, as simple as it is to follow instructions you can easily confuse yourself. BUT - all you have to do is exactly as the guide tells you. If you can do that then voila. If you mess up then someone will prolly pull you out of the crap cos it's actually pretty hard to total a PSP these days.

Really. And would the custom firmware be able to play something like, say, Crisis Core? That would be my next game I'll be playing.
I've got the downloaded version of Final Fantasy VII, but I keep getting something about Copy Protection Error. If only there was a way to just crack that.

I hear you there. I've already got a "Pandora Kit" bookmarked for me to purchase. Unless I can find a way to build one without soldering.

Buy a Datel Tool Battery from codejunkies.com or consoleshop.com instead of hard modding the battery like mrgooey suggested.
My preferred method :)
See the 1st link in juniR's post for the guide.

From what I've been talking about, Converting the Official 3.90 to a 3.90 M33 with the Pops Loader is the way to go. I've got the needed firmware downloaded and waiting for me to get the needed battery and Memory chip. All I need is the instructions on how to get it on there. Just for the record. I'm on the official 3.90 and I want to get the M33 version in there.

You only need popsloader if you wanna play PS1 games (and in your case I'd take it one step at a time seeing as you are a self-confessed noob) - in any case installing custom firmware is on a plate - I dunno why you ask you instructions again when I already told you where to go...
