i wondering which is better overall and which is better if i have to send in my console to microsoft to get repaired.

I think flashing the drive is better,because you can always restore it back to normal if you ever have to send it into Microsoft.Although getting the drive itself with either method voids your warranty.

well, i think that depends on which hitachi drive (rom version) you have. do you have the 78fk or earlier? or do you have the 79fl? if you have the 79fl, i believe you will have to mod with the passkey regardless.

As tyler1993 mentioned the 79FK & 79FL drives will need the 79PassKey in order to get into ModeB.After you are done flashing the chip it disables itself,but the other modchips such as the NME,Infectus,and Xeno so forth don't disable themselves.If you play games on live all the time I would suggest to stay away from these chips that don't disable.Another thing you can do with the 79PassKey is uninstall it after your done flashing,and you can do the same with the others but why pay more for a chip that doesn't disable itself.
