Can't Log Into Xbox Live On New 360, Failed to find my IP address

I just bought a 360, and I try to go onto xbox live for the first time, it detects my wired network Adapter, but when it checks the ip address, it says "Failed". I have it connected to a network switch, then to my modem and to my computer. I know the internet is all hooked up ok.

Any help?

most likely its the switch,
hook it straight to the xbox, if it works, buy a router.

Go to Xbox.com and go under the support tab. There are titorials there for troubleshooting Xbox Live and they work through about every type of connection you could use.
