hi my friend has a oldschool Bt USB voyager 210 modem.

i plugged the phone line into the modem/router and then i plugged the xbix 360 into the modem via ethernet cable but when i test xbox live it says 'connection - wired' then 'ip - confirmed' but DNS failed!. the wierd thing is another friend of mine ran his perfectly on a old bt modem for years (i remember because he could never use xbox live and the internet at the same time)
does the modem have to be connected to the pc to work?

i have install latest drivers and in 'network connections' its showing the 'Local Area Connection' as 'connected/firewalled' and it show Voyager USB NCIP or something like that so it say its working but the internet light isn't on.

all the other lights including DSL, USB, Ethernet, and Power are on.

i was told to ask here because you guys normally reply the quickest with expert advice. Please HELP!! (sorry if iv posted in the wrong place)

also, if in the end everything fails and i have to go and buy a linksy router is it possible just to plug a phone line into the router then the ethernet cable to the xbox or do u have to have a pc?? i would have thought it was possible in theory because i always thought you only needed the phone line to get the internet. thankyou in advance to any1 who can help

When you say "phone line" you are talking about a DSL line right?

first of all, thankyou both for your replys. Yes it is a DSL line, i forgot to mention that before

i found this on the link that steimy left

Note:

In most cases, you will need to use a PC to initially configure your high-speed Internet connection before directly connecting your Xbox 360 console to a modem. Contact your Internet service provider (ISP) for details.
this would suggest it was possible but only if youve set it up with a computer at least once.

the real problem is that my friend has a Dell Dimension 2200

and it doesnt have any ethernet sockets it only has 2 phone sockets in the back. hes had the internet working before so i dont know what the problem is.

iv had a look on the link that harpz79 gave me and iv posted a new thread on the site so hopefully someone will get back to me.

You gotta set up the modem on a PC with *your* ISP configuration.

No worries lads i managed to sort it out. i rang Bt (at peak times) and amazingly i didnt even get put on hold i was put straight through to Raj (Uk call center my A.s.s) and he told me that unless the DSL light is solid green (rather than blinking Green) then the line is not strong enough to recieve the internet, we later discovered that this was because my friend had a wall socket extension so that he could have a phone upstairs. However this extension was acting as a second microfilter so by the time the line got to the router it had been filtered down too much.

We removed the extension and only used the Bt Microfilter that was supplied with the modem and everything worked fine.

Again thankyou for every1 that tried to help me.
