It is my birthday today and I was thinking about buying a 360. I heard that the new 360s have been fixed and don't have the spontaneous death problem I have heard about. I also heard there is no way to delineate between the old and new machines. I really only want to buy a 360 if I can modify it to play backed up games. It sounds like I must take it apart to modify it. Will this void my warranty? Does this put me at risk of having my 360 spontaneously die and having no warranty with which to receive a replacement? This may be the deciding factor of whether or not I make this purchase. Thanks, for any input.

LOL Delineate???...too funny, good you busted out your dictionary for this thread. If you open your 360, it technically voids your warranty, but many people have received replacements for their modded RROD ones. Look for a newer 360 (manufactured after 10-07) and 175 Watt power, and it's a good chance you will get the newer 360s, which I know from personal experience run a LOT cooler than the old ones. If you mod your 360, it's a matter of when, not if, you get banned from XBL. I think it's worth the risk and will continue to play backups.

Does that mean I could not play original games on XBL on a modded system without risking being banned? XBL is a big lure for the 360 so I think I may skip the system if I have to choose between a modded system and XBL.

Yeah, if you have a modded system, you can get banned playing originals. Know like a few people in the real world who had that happen. I would mod it and take your chance with it on XBL. If you can afford it, get 2 360s, one for backups offline and originals online, what some people do here. Just make sure you buy it from a place where you can see the manufacture date and power supplw watts before because you want to get a Falcon, which is a lot cooler.
