I know many people are having trouble, and I've searched the interney over and over again, and still to no avail.
Ok here is the problem, I rented SSBB yesterday to try and play, and of course it didn't read because I have the wiikey. I knew that it wouldnt work, but I wanted to see for myself. The problem is I have a launch wii, and I was worried about my wii having trouble to read DVD-DL, so I wanted to rent it and put my worries to rest.
I thought that if i put the game in, it would at least show the picture in the channel. But it didn't, so I got worried. I decided to updata my NTSC-Wii to 3.2U firmware via internet. I was hoping maybe that was the problem. Of course that still didnt help, so I was like well what if i revert back to 1.9b wiikey firmware from my current 1.9g firmware.
So I stick in the 1.9b firmware disc, launch it. I hear the whole "SEGA" and see the little booty. I press a button on my GC control, it begins. Once it does the 1st run it completes, tells me to press a button again. I do so, as soon as I do it says "failed to read disc", i try pressing the button a few more times...same error. I get frustrated, turn it off, and then back on. What do you know? SSBB appeas in my channel. SSBB plays without any problem. Now my Wii doesnt read any backups.
I obviously corrupted my wiikey's firmware, and that is why my wii is "unmodded" and SSBB plays. Sounds good up until now. Actually many ppl did this intentionally to play the game. Here is where the problem is, it doesn't read any backups (Wii or GC), it doesnt read Config 1.3 or Config 1.2, nor does it read the 1.9b or 1.9g disc. I made a recovery disc, and I followed the intrsuctions. I'm not sure if I did it right or not.
I burned the iso using IMGBURN at 2x, stuck it in my wii, reset, and then let it sit there for like 10 minutes just to be sure. I didn't notice anything happening (and I know I'm not). But the DVD drive wasn't even spinning. I did this several times, with several different burns, padded, not padded, all on DVD-R. The same media I used to burn all my backups on, which played flawlessly.
Wii: NTSC-Wii, from launch date
SSBB: NTSC
Wiikey firmware: was 1.9g
Wii Firmware: 3.2U
Previous problems: no
Media used: Memorex DVD-R
Wii modded date: February 2007, never had problems reading

There is always a possibility that the WIikey has become corrupt beyond repair (even the recovery disc doesn't work). There have been a few that have had this issue.
I would suggest replacing your Modchip to 1 of the more newer ones. Like wasabii or Infectus 2/ARGON. Which all have DMS/D2A/D2B compatibility in the works.
I am sure allot will disagree but allot of the older first Gen modchips are losing support. I wouldn't put any more money into 1 of those Modchips if you have to replace the Wiikey you have now.

Your choice but I have a feeling within a few months more issues are going to appear with 1st Gen Modchips. Plus with the newer D2C Modchips supporting DMA/D2A/D2B I think the older first gen modchips are going to become obsolete and not be supported.
When you install the new Wiikey I would suggest installing a switch in it to turn the Wiikey off so you don't have to corrupt the Wiikey firmware to play your retail version of SSBB.

I was planning on installing a switch. However, I didnt corrupt my firmware to play SSBB. It was an accident. Do you have an idea as to which wire is better to install the switch onto?

larrylje, you have a point. Considering Wiikey.cn is down and there have not been any news since Mario Galaxy. I cancelled my order for a new wiikey. However, once I got my launch wii, and modchip I sorta stopped following the mod scene. What chipset does my wii have if its a launch wii, and what are the best modchips now?

-same happened to me but the problem is your midea use verbatim -r especcially for updates
-you wiikey is semi bricked so pop in the recovery disc and when you see the gamecube symbole in the disc channel leave the wii on the main menue for about 10min to be sure then restart this time start the media and run an update through this disk

I know my wiikey is screwed, and its not the media. Ive used memorex DVD-R for all of my backups and I've never once had any trouble with them, why would it make a difference now? Even then when I stick in the recovery disc, the disc channel doesnt display the GC icon, but I know what to do if it ever did. Thanks for your help. I think basically my wiikey is "dead" in the sense that it has no firmware on it. Like I originally said, I stuck in the 1.9b and it didnt even get to 1% before it said it couldnt read the disc.

I tried verbatim, memorex, and maxell. All burned at 1x and 2x using IMGBURN, padded and non padded. No luck. I literally just finished removing my wiikey as I type this. I should be getting a wasabi in like 3-4 days. I know on the wasabi installation instructions it says no need to place a switch, but I want to anyways. Anyone know which wire to put it on? It says the power and ground should be less than 1 inch long so those two are out. I have a D2A chipset so that leaves 3 wires "A" "B" "F"

If you are installing a switch I would put it on either the power or ground as that is the only way you can be certain you are actually turning off/on the chip. If you put the switch on one of the other wires you are still powering the chip. Then, when you turned the switch to the off position it would be like doing a 4 wire install or something, which I think would just cause a ton of errors and probably result in your wii not being able to read any discs.

Ya I figured that. Either way even if the chip did work and read with a switch on one of the other wires the chip would still be powered, and thus making the use of the switch pointless. I guess maybe using thicker gauge wire for one of them...
