I'm all pumped up about my new DVDR setup but can't seem to get thru 100% of a burn. I've tried just backing up data files and it Nero craps out anywhere from 10% in to it all the way up to about 80% of it. I'm trying to back up a DVD, so I used dvdshrink (that was easy), then Nero Burning Rom (that was easy) and the burn has failed every time. I've even tried backing up data files, that failed too. This is supposed to be good media (I think) and a good drive (I hope). Anyone have any tips?

Oh, I tried DVD X Copy and that got a write error too :(

I'm a newbie as well but your problem sounds like buffer overrun. Try not having any other programs running while you are writing, and turn off your screen saver. Also something I have found useful is Nero 6 has the ability to mount an "image drive". It creates a virtual drive that you write an image to. If there are any problems with the DVD you are writing they will show up here before you create a coaster. DVD+Rs aren't that cheap yet.

I will have to try that (although I have a decent computer/memory) and had nothing really running.... Just burnt my 6th coaster w/ Recordnow MAx :( Dammit! How do I mount an image drive in Nero?

What other video programs do you have installed? Roxio can cause problems with Nero.
Just a thought,

bluearch,

When almost everyone is doing everything perfect we don't usually hear from him or her so I'll try not to get into anything you have no trouble with -

First you have to decide whether you wish to back up a DVD or a Data disc !

Second - Are you running Roxio ? With all those errors when you are doing everything right - that could be a problem. Rid yourself of Roxio.

Third - If you don?t know if your media is any good then it probably is your media - top-of-the-shelf Name Brand.

Fourth - without getting into a disagreement with you, if there is even a remote chance that DVDShrink wasn't all that easy and perhaps the r4emote possibility that even you may have possibly made a mistake with Nero (that was easy) ROM then we might be able to help you with your applications.

Nothing personal but as a general rule, when DVDShrink is used correctly and the same with Nero - the burns run in the close to 100 percent perfect 99.999% of the time.

Hoping to help -

"P"

I shall rid myself of Roxio - I hope that is the culprit!

I know it's not the media - it's name brand good stuff.

Although can Roxio screw up Nero, DVD X COPY, AND Recordnow Max? That seems weird to me...

I'll post my results tomorrow. Thanks to all for your suggestions. HOpefully I won't lose another DVD+R :)

Hi bluearch,
Roxio conflicts with a lot of different programs. If you do some research here you may find a post that discusses using regedit to make some changes. You may want to go to the AD software forum and ask.
I think you will be happier with just Nero though.

Getting as far as you have means you will be successful very soon.

That must be the problem cause Pete and I both thought of it at the same time! :D

Good luck,
Frank

I was also told that some problems I was having were due to multiple recording software conflicts but I solved my problems without uninstalling anything. I think as long as you don't have any memory resident portions of the programs like incd or directcd running you are ok, just having the program on your drive shouldn't effect anything. Use msconfig to delete any mem resident programs you don't need including any writing software that has installed some sort of "quickstart" resident. Its amazing how many programs want to install themselves in memory and the average computer user doesn't know the effect they have on performance or how to get them out.
I will say that my only DVD coaster was produced by Roxio but it was my error. I prefer it for making music CDs but unless you are making a data DVD its no good for them.
Also, either try my Nero Image drive suggestion or use DVD-RWs until you figure out the problem. Sounds like you have enough coasters for your next party at this point.
One other thought, does your writer have smartburn or a large buffer? If not you might want to try slowing down your write speed and see what that does.

Nero has a tool for registry and driver compatibility checks:

I spent 2 weeks and about 20 DVD's before I got my combination right (see post in this section titled "A winning combination").

Don't give up. I finally dumped my OS and reloaded from scratch with only my OS and the software I wanted to use. After a firmware upgrade to my DVD drive, it all fell together. My advice is try a package, if it doesn't work, do a complete uninstall on it before loading another.

Ok I have had similar problems with +R discs. The solution to my problem was very simple. Kill Nero 6.0 and install Nero 5.5 which only burns CDr's. Then I went to Nero and updated to 5.5.10.54 . To find out if your problem is the same as mine try -R disc if you have a dual format burner. If not I still think 5.5 is a better Nero version. Mainly because it's been out forever and 99% of the bugs are worked out. BTW had 5 coasters using Nero 6.0 and 0 coasters using Nero 5.5

Just my 2 cents

No winning combos its the Sony burner just do the firmware updates so burner reads that is DRU510A 10d. Make sure you do 10c first the do 10d then use whatever burn app you like...and media as well I have used Radio Shack DVD-R I almost find the generic dvd-r
are just as good as name brand. Funny part of this is most of my coasters are SONY brand! I assumed Sony burner/Sony Media cant get any better "combo"........ WRONG!! Do updates and you should be home free and able to use what app you like not what the burner likes
as it should be let me know if you cant find i have them.
Good Luck

Dammit. Burnt another coaster! I removed all other burning software and downgraded to Nero 5.5 like what people suggested above. This time the burn process made it like 90% of the way thru then gave me the burn failure. I must be doing something wrong... I basically open the DVD in dvdshrink and downsize it (using auto) so it will fit. Then i open Nero Burning Rom and drag all the files from DVD Shrink into the VIDEO_TS folder. I then burn. It pops up a message about multisession and i say to Not use multisession (is that right). It then burns for a while then fails. Here's my log if it helps? Is it possible i got a bad batch of Philips DVD+Rs? That doesn't sound very likely to me, but who knows.... Someone mentioned my ASPI layer might be bad - how do i check that? I also ran that Nero tool to disable the drivers it doesn't like...

Hello everyone :)

PLEASE HELP ME ! ! !

I recently bought a Verbatim Producer 44E external DVD burner that says "External DVD+rw/+rcdrwfirewire/usb2.0" on the box.

I have tried burning a dvd numerous times following the guide from this website. I used a program that made the original dvd able to fit on a 4.7 dvd. It save the following files into a folder on my hard drive AND when I follow the instructions to get it onto a blank DVD it comes up not allowing me to do so.

I have put the following files here so someone might know what is going on and help me :(

Here are the names of the files in the folder:
video_ts.bup, a few vts.bup's, vtsO (navigation files, and a bunch of VTS.VOB files. They all total less than 4.7 gig but are still big enoungh to be the movie.
I am using a dvd called " ProData DVD-R dvd recordable dvd 4.7 gig Write once"

I have deleted Roxio easy cd creater and also downloaded the Nero program for cleaning registry.

When I extracted the above files it seemed to work ok - but using Nero to put them onto dvd does not work sand it gave me the following text file:

Bluearch,
bigunit has already suggested that you install an ASPI Driver - find one here - http://download.com.com/3000-2098-10161912.html

Next - after you have used DVDShrink (when you are using it WRITE DOWN the folder you are doing the backup to -

THEN
Follow these directions EXACTLY when using Nero and you'll be on your way -

How to burn using Nero 6.0.
Step by Step ?
Do not use Nero Wizard.
When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the ?New Compilation? window. Directly under the title ?New Compilation? is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose DVD. Directly under that click on DVD Video. Then click ?New? in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the DVD Video window. In the left screen, click VIDEO_TS. In the File Browser screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the DVDShrink folder holding your work and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the ?Shift? key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click ?Burn? and Baby, Scream it to me, Who?s your Daddy Now ???

Guess what my Friend ??

Go watch some TV, call your mother (It?s been awhile since she?s heard from you, don?t ya know? J) You are done !!!
Keep all fingers and toes away from Mr. Computer. Never mess with the lady when she?s working ? it would be a health thing, you understand -
Go and have your coffee, when Nero is done she will let you know ;-))

Enjoy, ?P?

jga,

Reading your messages I notice that your NEC isn't playing well with others -
"jefh11" in another thrtead provided the most updated firmware link and I'm passing it on to you (Thank you jefh11) Flash your NEC with this (verision 1.09) remember, after you have flashed your drive you need to power down everything to allow it to "take".
For the latest firmware upgrade point your snout toward - (it being like a truffel hunt :-))

Hope it helps -

Either try to reinstall windows if nothing works..Or go to microsoft update and download all the patches..Then make sure ur drive has firmware D.And download DSS(Drive Speed Selector) at the sony web site..

I been using Ritek G04 & G03 has It works good for me.

Intel D875PBZ - P4 w/HT 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB 512KB Cache - 2GB DDR PC3200 - 760GBs [1x500GB - 1x160GB -1 x60GB +x40GB] - GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 128MB - Sony Dru-510a

I had very similar problems with my sony dru-510a, I bought it a few days ago and it came with the 1.0d firmware and it would always bomb at 10,84 or 90% until i regressed the firmware to a previous version by flashing the 1.0c firm over the top and it worked and i havent had a failed disc since!

http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/downloads/Firmware10c/510A_10c.zip

Download that and see how you get on, If you find it doesnt help you then there seems to be an even newer patch than the 1.0d, This 1.0f seems to be very new and i would only try it as a last resort:

http://www.sony.jp/products/Consumer/Peripheral/Datastorage/Support/common/fw510a10f.exe

Let us know if that makes any difference.

Thanks. I actually upgraded to 1.0F yesterday. I will have to try 1.0C.

I think it might be bad media - is that possible?

I bought some DVD-RW and burnt the image like 5 times, never had a signle bad burn. Thought maybe the 1.0F was the fix so tried my Philips DVD+R. And the MF crapped out at like 90% again with a write error.

It looks like it actually copied all the files to the DVD+R when I compare my VIDEO_TS folders side by side. Maybe it's when it tries to finalize it or something? I can't play it in any DVD player (computer or A/V).

I might see if I can return this media, too many coasters :)

I thought it was bad media for me, I have Bulkpaq orange and green and datasafe +rw and it crapped out on everything until the 1.0c flash then it was fine.

By the way i have found that using Nero in simulation mode gives a very accurate reproduction of an acutal burn (dont ask me how but it does) and before i found the flash that fixed the prob i must have tried 50 different things that would have resulted in a coaster a time had i not used the simulation mode.

I saved myself a shedload of failed discs that way so i would use that mode if i was use instead of constantly wasting media, If you try it you will see it bombs out at the same points but you dont lose the disc!

Good Luck

Well on my Nero 6.3.0.2 on the burn tab of the dvd-video new compliation window there is a button to switch on which says simulation, Once you click that make sure to unclick the write box and it will only simulate the burn but will tell you if it will bomb or not without losing discs.

This only works on +r or -r and not the rw variants, For some reason you have to write ony with the rw's.
