nonono,

Wouldn't he be able to do the same thing using Alcohol 120% ?? and then he could check the entire thing using his onboard players, should it prove OK he then could do a disc copy 1:1 ??

Alcohol 120% has a free 30 day trial -

Yes it should do the same thing, I havent tried simulation on alcohol myself but as long as the simulation passes then the burn almost always will.

I still think the older flash to 1.0c may be of help here as the later firmwares seem to add more incompatability from what i can see, Funny old world.

bluearch,

I've re-read your posts and the suggestions made and haven't jogged anything in my mind but before chewing anymore media up go to alcohol 120% and download their trial (I liked it so much I bought it.) Treat it just like a drive, as you can see in my signature - AXV CD/DVD-ROM.
Burn your work to it and you can play from that just like a disc in a physical drive. It will make your trials easier (and cheaper).

Thanks. As far as the Nero Simulation goes. It's greyed out for me. Their docs say to disable power-burn ( a sony buffer underrun feature) and i should be able to do the simulation. But that doesn't work. Lucky me :) I'll try the Alcohol 120% demo. Thanks.

Dammit. Burnt another coaster :( Tried Nero w/ 1.0C firmware this time. I really think it might be bad media? I mean, DVD-RW worked.... Could it be anything else?

It seems to actually burn everything in the VIDEO_TS (which is everything). But the burn fails with a write error still .. and the DVDs are unplayable.

Could the VIDEO_TS files be bad? I made it w/ the latest beta of dvdshrink.

Bluearch.

I?m feeling really bad, I believe I?ve let you down ?
I made some assumptions that I shouldn?t have made ?

You see when I have a program that doesn?t work righjt or a DVD that isn?t behaving, I delete everything and start over, just to make sure that all my parts are there and nothing has been corrupted ?

In the beginning I should have told you to start over with your commerical DVD disc ? just to make sure it was all together ? in other words, let?s start over on a clean plate ?

In fact, I want you to download the new version of DVDShrink 3.1

That means that you are to start with Shrink 3.1 and your original DVD. The new Shrink does it all. It will use your Nero and rip your DVD, back it to your HD in a Temp file AND burn your disc, not much for you to do Except watch, Do Not Touch, just watch !

Here you go for this program ?

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm

Meanwhile use this CD guide, just change it to DVD ? it?s pretty easy. Instead of writing to your disc, click on the address for your Alcohol 120% virtual drive ? play it the same way ?

six.6.six,

LOL,

I was re-reading the posts and it did look for awhile that it wasn't suggested, it was, but in the middle of a post early on the FIRST page -

Looking at this page, it seemed as if the "Brains" were anything but -

We tried it early (using RW media) and for some reason it worked fine - it only acted up with the -R media - Go figure ??

In second attempt to save him discs we suggested to him again (we suggested it to him first on page one) to use a virtual drive to burn his work so that it might be played and anylized -

Instead of trying to solve the problem, we should have just had him make a disc to disc copy "on the fly" from his RW media but we've been trying to make sure his problem didn't happen again - Hence starting over from the beginning -

I think I've got you up to speed, we're always looking for new ideas, can you think of anything we've overlooked ?? All input is welcome -

This forum is all about people helping people, we don't care if you're brand new or an ole' fart like me -

Pete

Hi! I have been at this burning process awhile and I think I can help you with all your questions.

First of all, I have 3 Sony DRU500,510AX and 560SX Prototype. I use XP Professional & Have AMD XP2600 using the DRU500 burner. Intel P4 1.8 with Xp Home Editon for the Dru510AX, and last a Intel P4 3.2GHZ 800FSB, Asus P4c800-E Deluxe mother board in a Koolance Case! housing my Dru560SX Model. No matter how Fast or Slow the PC are that I have used, I have seen the same results you are experiencing. You might not like the answers but here goes.

1) Start Over from Scratch!! thats right- FDISK! write zero!! clean house.

2) Your using the DRU500? from Sony?,watch the media types you are using!!! I have personally ran into several media DVD-R disc that are not compatible fully with the Sony Burners but are good with Pioneers. Try Accu media and TDK 2X RW as a test before burning. Always use a RW 1st!! if it burns the RW, 98% of the time it will burn the DVD-R by the same manufactuer. With Accu media, I have burned over 300 disc, with 5 coaster errors due to burning faster than 4x. If you stay around 2x-4x with Accu,TDK,Ritek,Sony, Meritline Brand DVD-Rs you will have great success!

3) Keep it simple, and get Nero 5.9.9, leave 6 alone, I am sorry, but I cannot disclose to you all the reasons. Just do it!
4) Stop using Nero to burn Video_ts folders, use Coujos Image Tool Burner instead, yes you will still need to load the Nero system, but use the Coujo Image tool Burner, it handles Raw Video data very well!!
5) download Decryptor 3.1.6 or higher only,
6) make a separate folder partition around 12gigs in size on your hard drive.

Load the sony Record Now Veritas program!! that came with your dvd burner, do not load Sonic!! it will screw things up for you if you do not have more than 256MBs of DDR Ram and a processor speed of 1.8 and higher to compensate for its usage. I suggest you put it on a separte computer, its a nice program but a resource hog. nuff said.

After you have accomplished these small things, you will eliminate all your problems. and don't use Roxio, Veritas will do the job for you!!

If you need further assistance, let me know, PI me.

P.S Promedia DVD-RW work 88% of the time with Sony DVD Burners, but the DVD-R by the same manufactuer have a lower than 23% success rate, Accu Media RWs 99% success rate, and DVD-R types have a 97% with sony Burners!! goto meritline.com and look the compatability charts for media with different burner types. The ASUS 4x $128 DVD Burner is Awesome by the way, check it out.

Hey Fellas, thanks to all that replied. Well, there is definitely a pattern here. Basically, no matter what I burn (data, dvd, etc) and no matter what program (nero, recordnow, etc) the backup will fail with a write error if the total backup job is about 4 GB or bigger. And only with DVD+R. So, I can burn DVD-RW just fine up to any size. I can burn DVD+R just fine up to about 4GB. But if over, it will fail (yet burns fine w/ DVD-RW). So, all that makes sense to me is that my SOny just doesn't like Philips media.

What do you all think?

Boy, are you stubborn, Philips Media works well with Pioneer Burners and TDKs, Not Sony Burners! but their RWs have a 93% success rate. What type of operating system are you using? 98SE? ME or Xp Home or Pro?

Go to www.meritline.com and order a 25 pack of Accu DVD-R Media 1x, download firmware 1.0f or 2.0f to burn this media at 2x speed. Also, is your computer built or purchased? In other words, what mother board are you using? Asus, MSI,Asrock, Cathedral, Ziac? Is your hard drive partitioned locked with serial codes inbedded which takes up about 2Gigs? and finally is the partioned space on your OS larger than 6gigs without compression file format added? All these things are important to address, also, are you using the Sony DRU510? if so, you might want to take it back! and get the newer version. Some Dru510 had drive reading problems, the one I purchased did, and I replaced it with the 500AX that was cheaper and more reliable. I've known other techs who swear by their 510s and others who report minor problems, Its possible that you may have gotten a rotten apple. But first answer the other questions & I'll get back with you.

Bluearch,

I see in your post you are concerned about the amount of info you are trying to burn -

When the Mfgr's write 4.7GB on a disc they are playing with the math on what can and can't fit -

Bottom line - THE maximum you can fit on a DVD 4.36GB.
If you're not able to write up to there, you do have a problem, over that number there is a ceiling that won't let you do it -

Pete

Well folks, it was the media. Got some Memorex, burned both DVD+R and DVD-R. So the moral of this story is, if you have a Sony DRU-510A, stay away from Philips media :)

Yeah I was just going tell you about that too bad I didn't see your post sooner. I just ran in to a similiar problem. I was using DVD Shrink the old or new version doesn't matter. I used Nero to burn with and I was using verbatim dvd-r and burned about 30 copies successfully. Well ran out of dvd's so there was a good deal on dvd+r at office depot. I made one successful dvd+r and the second was a coaster, so I'm going to look into the media hopefully I didn't just spend 100 bones on junk media.

On da pot wit my laptop.
