I was playing SSBB with a friend last night, and decided to try the wifi online game...

I found it pretty odd that you cant play online with other people if you have 2 people with you

I mean, I can play with 3 other online players.... but you would think nintendo would give you the option of playing you and a friend both using the same wii, with other people on the internet as well

its so weird that you cant that I thought maybe I am understanding something wrong. Can someone confirm this?

If I understood the person I was Brawling correctly, he and someone on his Wii we're playing against me, which contradicts you're situation.

According to Gametrailers you have to use friend code to get all the options you would get online as if your friends were sitting next to you.

I do all the time on xbox live. I just find it hard to believe nintendo would make it so you cant do it like that. But I guess that must be the case.

I also have tried every option I can find and can't get 2 players on one wii playing an online match, either as a team or separate in a free-for-all. My friends and I would love to team up and take on the world, but it doesn't seem possible. :(
Only thing I haven't yet tried is starting a single 4 player online match, then hitting buttons on controller 2 on either the character select screen, or in the practice holding area before 3 other online players join the game. Will try that tomorrow and post back if it works, but I doubt it.

(by the way, is anyone else getting serious lag on lots of their games?)

I was expecting some lag but didnt get any...

am I to assume that the online play is not possible with 2 players on one wii?

no one seems to have done it except one person who was very vague with the details

Yeah, he is full of it. I don't see how a wii with one inernet connection can have 2 players. I mean most of us have seen how much lag you get when you have 1 player on each wii. More players to a wii will increase the lag to a constant.

Why? There has to be less data transfer between the participating 2 Wiis with 2 pairs of players than there is between 4 individual Wiis don't you think?

I mean with respect to the data that has to tranfer through the one wii. Like the difference between streaming music on your pc and streaming a video.

Nope I don't get that either. We aren't talking video streaming which uses much more data transfer for a start.

Lag is caused by the time takes for data to transfer from one place to the next. Logically if it has to go all round a few houses it takes longer so the less the better. That is why playing on a LAN is instant and playing online isn't. The more ppl playing at dispersed locations, the more bandwidth is needed and it only takes one guy with a naff connection to seriously slow the whole game.

All the Wii has to do really is translate the instructions given by players on each machine to action and it has to be faster via a second controller on the same machine than online so that would have to reduce the lag overall.
