Problems Burning 16x9 2.35:1 Using Windows DVD Maker

I've been using windows dvd maker to burn avi's since my nero 8 only burns vobs?!?!?! It always says video transcoding failed?!?!!? If anyone can help me that too i would be grateful. I like the menu screens & automatic chaptering in windows dvd maker. But anyway heres the problem when i burn a 16x9 2.35:1 movie it comes out stretched up to fit 1.85:1!?!?!?! Also when i've been ripping dvd's to vob then i've been using virtualdubmod to use fill mode to add black bars to create 2.35:1 image from a 1.85:1 (For movie projects i make) I resize the picture to 720x390 it seems to fit perfect once i've burned it, i would prefer to have it at 720x576, the usual size. If anyone ca help me with any of these problems i would be grateful. Thanks In Advance
