I may be new, but I these forums have assisted me for the last two years. I've been browsing the public forums for help with anything from video encoding to installing a flip-top on my PS2. Only until now, I have a question that I need to register and ask. (lol)
I wanted to know is it possible to have multiple video (movies) on a single DVD that can play on a DVD player (or PS2)?
I have some movies (most are .avi files) on my computer that are approximately 700MB each. Since DVD disks are 4+ Gigs, I should be able to put at least 6 movies on one DVD, no?
I know that I will need to encode the files, but I am wondering if I am able to put more than one on a DVD. I tried using Nero and I was only able to put one movie (which was 2 hours long).
Now, on the actual DVD disk, it says 120 min. video. . . I can only put 2 hours of video on there, no matter what size they are?
This situation reminded me of Audio CDs. For Audio you could only put 60min of audio on there. Then became a function where you could put 700MB of music on there and it will play. Is there a function like this for DVD? Or will it be the same as making a Data DVD and won't work on my home DVD Player?
Or if I encode the files first and then burn them all to disk will it work?
Your problem is that all your movies are in Mpeg4(DivX) format, that is why they are so small. Once you encode them to Mpeg2(DVD) the files will be about 4x larger. Nero is encoding to Mpeg2 and that is why you can really put only one, may be two, on 4.7GB disk.
You can burn those files as data, but they may not play on stand alone player, unless it is capable playing DivX or XviD file format.

yes you can put 6 movies on one dvd, but require you do to in 2 steps..you can use either POWERDIRECTOR, ULEAD VIDESTUDIO..i'm not recommended use nero vision (this take long time and manual menu create not enough functional)..
as i use ulead videostudio:::
first==>> i make image file size dual layer 8.5gb
second==>i shrink image file back to single layer dvd (4.7gb) by using nero recode 2 or dvdfab platium.
total time to complete ~2 hours to get 160 mins on single layer dvd..

You can do all that, and also can use DVD Flick(free), ConvertxtoDVD or Nero Vision. They will put even 10 movies to one DVD5 alright, but with total disregard to quality. I would not go with more than 2, or if the Avi source is very good quality, maybe 3 movies.
