Ok, I have a release date Wii but I forgot which chip I had installed being it's been over a year. But that doesn't matter since I'm getting a new one. I need a new one because I'm unable to play the newer games, like Galaxy and so on.

My issue is this...

One guy who will do it tells me that Wiikey is now garbage since there's no more updates being made for it and you can get your system bricked and banned by using it. So he uses something called Yowii which is some kind of external thing.

Another guy who fixed my Xbox for me a while back will mod it for me but he uses Wiikey and says it's upgradeable.

So which do I use/trust?!

Any info is much appreciated, thanks!

Wii w/ wiinja and voice recognition software so I don't have to push a button to turn it on
Xbox 360 w/ 5,000GB HDD and external toilet function, toilet tank also works as small refrigerator

PC: Core850Duo 13,000,000,001GHz (OC to 485.5), Nvidia GeForce 10,000GT, 747GB Crucial Technologies Ram, 1-1,000GB, 2-800,000GB, 1-14,000,000GB internal HDD and 1-300,000,000,000GB External HDD, 300.1 HD audio
MSI 975X Platinum Power Up Ed. motherboard, Gigabyte Titanic case.

Recommended chips - new ARGON when it's released or perhaps WASABI.

I have wiikey - there's no guaranteed support for the future though everything up to current date works apart from original SSBB (backups are a chore to get going but it's possible). If the support doesn't continue which I suspect is the possibility then my Wiikey is coming out and the ARGON is going in - unless I'm tempted with WASABI's price. You can try wiikey if you like cos it's cheap but it doesn't matter what your modder guy tells you - he can not guarantee future updates.

Yowii - no idea but it's not discussed very much, if at all, here so make of that what you will ;) Banned = Absolute BS as well - brick happens if you update your firmware with an imported game, regardless of the modchip.

So what's the issue with getting SSBB to work?

Read the SSBB thread - there are various issues and that's where you need to ask about brawl. I wouldn't be able to list them all in any case.

Just for the record - I have brawl running and the only issue I've had is random lockups which I hope will be solved with a change of media. Other than that it's not really appropriate for me to bring discussion about that game here as it's discouraged to do that except in that thread. I only mention it because you are considering wiikey and that's what I have - Everything else I have works absolutely fine with wiikey.

No it's not 1.9u - it's actually 1.9g...

If you have a wiikey you can prolly update straight to 1.9g without going to 1.9b. Also SSBB backup works fine here - my lockups are down to a corrupt image BUT generally backup success on wiikey is not as easy to achieve as on other chips. It is more picky about media and how it is burned. In other words you are more likely to get away with a greater variety of disks, including more cheaper ones on the latest generation of chips.

If it ain't broke, don't swap it. See what you can do with the chip you are using right now before jumping into one of those expensive and fancy chips. I just applied d2ckey to my wii and it runs SSBB fine.

Actually ads, I'm pretty sure I have a wiinja installed now that I remember. So that being said, I'm unable to play Galaxy or Smash Bros. and from what I know there isn't a way to update it to get those games working. So some say wiikey and other's say no wiikey eh? As for waiting for new chips to use crappy media, I've been making backups for my 360 forever now so I'm a strict verbatim user, and get those for my wii as well. So the kind of media I use isn't really an issue.

I didn't say "crappy" - I actually said cheaper media. Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean to say it sucks... Everybody knows you pay more for a big brand name regardless ;)

for example I have SSBB running on my wiikey on 2 types of dual layer disk. It runs on Aone and Verbatim - the only two I've tried. (My intial lockups are not a media issue - the image was damaged and the game plays fine on both apart from when I select Mario and the game rocks btw - played it for ages last night ... using Aone disk).

The Verbatim costs almost 4 times what the Aone costs (and also Aone is very popular with XBox 360 users - my reason for giving them a go in the first place). I know which I'll be using next time - though, of course, that depends on future DL releases and continued success. Verbatim is still the only media I've always had consistent success on with single layer and I would only try other SL now if I change my chip. Single layer is pretty cheap anyway but if you burn enough disks the saving you could make on DL might actually pay for a better and more futureproof chip. :)

Well crappy, cheap, whatever! Heh, word is the cheaper media damages your laser and shortens the use you get out of it in the longrun. So if that is the case then the cheaper ones sound pretty crappy to me. As far as the cost, Best Buy has verbatims on sale every couple of weeks, alternating from single to dual layer, 20 duals goes for around 30 bucks while 50 singles are 13. So I stock up and then just wait for the next sale.

Mama didn't raise no fool... or something.

hmmmm - you are way too general and still don't seem to get the meaning of the word "cheap". Let me simplify.

Cheap does NOT mean crappy. Crappy does NOT mean cheap. And if they are interchangeable then why don't you take that "crap" chip out and put a better one in? j/k but hopefully you understand the difference now?

Oh and you ain't the only guy who stocks up when they see a sale - but all products can be bought at knock down prices. They reduce the prices of cheaper media at times as well you know? ...again just having a laugh m8.

Also in all my years of burning media for various drives & consoles of varying purpose I've always used the cheapest media that would work consistently and guess what? - not one knackered lens :)

Stick with Verbs - I'm not telling you to change. I'm only pointing out an advantage with better chips of more choice in media which could possibly be quite economical also.

EDIT - BTW - media compatability is one of the main things that is generally mentioned in chip reviews and manufacturer specifications as it's something most ppl are concerned with.

Yah I've never even heard of a case of a lens dying. Seems like it's one of those things were it's like... if you make out with someone that has AIDS you can get it of you drink like 200 gallons of their spit or something. But I mean c'mon, I'm not dumping 200 gallons of spit onto my wii lens know what I'm sayin'? Cuz I don't.

I can't believe that using cheaper media will cause the laser to burn out. Sounds like BS to me.

What would be of interest here is the order in which the original disc is backed up. Is it a bit for bit transfer to an ISO in exactly the same order or is it randomly placed for burning.

If the second option, then this would give a laser a harder time seeking up and down the disc for the correct data. Would like to bet that the motor drive fails before the laser.

Anyone out there had a laser fail?
