hi,

Used the x clamp and thermal paste to fix RROD and has been working fine for about three weeks. Then all of a sudden this evening I get the old memory error again 0110! Has anybody else had this happen to them? I will take it aprt again and maybe look at re-directing the airflow or improving the removal of hot air.

Any other ideas of things that work once x clamp and thermal paste have been done? Have quite good knowledge of fixing them but stumped with this particualr machine!

Cheers,

Steve

Did you use a shim under the gpu heatsink?
If you didn't I would try that, if that fixes it I would definetly try to improve cooling solutions at all costs, mainly around the gpu.

Yes, used a shim and really went to town on high quality thermal paste. I openend it up yesterday and put some bigger slower fans in and over heated it to get the solder to run. Turned it back on and it worked fine! I'm convinced that the x clamp and thermal paste work but only for a few weeks and then it's a case of playing about with the contact! Placing the fans over the processor works well so that it doesn't turn itself off, I would never recommend over heating it any other way!

Does anyone know of airflow replacment ducts that help? I don't like the way that the airflow moves around the system and would rather not use card!

Cheers,

Steve

You probably need to re-adjust the washers/tension of the x-clamp fix.

You'll be doing that alot with that machine I bet.

Just curious though....when you say you "went to town" on the thermal paste, what did you use? AS5 is as good as you get.

That's what I used but I really cleaned up the chips etc... I've got four machines at the moment with RROD and all of them have been fine accpet this particular one which is my original one! It's Jan 06 whereas the others are either older or in the same year! It's amazing what some people do to them to try and get them working! One of them was covered in flux where someone had tried to solve the contact problem! Unbelievable! It's actually very easy to fix 3 red lights but you have to be prepared to have to open it up every now and again to get it working again.

I'm interested in airflow and cooling though and would be interested in any successful mods that people have done!

Trying to fix a system with RROD is like having a retarded child. You love it but its never going to get any better and your always going to be frustrated with it.

If I were you I would make the dvd drive external, add a cpu heatsink to the gpu, and add fans over both heatsinks, and have the stock fans blow fresh air in. Cut the case for better venelation.
After you have to retighten the screws so much with the shim, its going to eventually warp the board where the gpu sits to where it will not work it all. I seen a board where the gpu was sunk so bad the screw modification would not work.
