I have no idea what software my burning program is. I want to install Nero, and was told I am using the Roxio engine for my xp Home system and must uninstall it first before installing another burning software.
There is nothing listed in the ADD/REMOVE except the usual suspects ie Media Player,Hotfixes and a couple of others, but nothing mentioning anything about Roxio. I also went to Services and could not find Anything there to indicate what the name of my burning program was/is., So exactly how to I find out what my burning program is? and then, since it isnt in the ADD/REMOVE section, how do I uninstall it?
Thanks for any help.

Whatever burning rom you have will definitely be listed in your ADD/remove programme list. Go over it again carefully. Older versions of Nero are sometimes listed under 'Ahead' or you might have Veritas or Sonic applications which are also burning rom.

Thanks Discmania
I only have my cd-writer/burner enabled now as I wanted to make some vcds first before going into dvd burning. I did find in Services this was the only thing hinting at cd burning = (IMAPI CD Burning COM Service). I must have missed this before. I guess, is that the software burning program, and after checking it for dependencies, there are no programs that depend on it and it doesnt depend on any program either meaning I guess I can disable it so as to install Nero?
Am I right about that? Would I disable the IMAPI program and then install Nero 5.5?
I havent installed Nero yet. I don't want to screw it up which is why I wanted to make sure I had the other burning software/s uninstalled (or I guess disabled is the same thing as uninstalled?)
Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it. Just install Nero. If there are any conflicts it is likely Nero will tell you but I doubt if there would be.

smg, I don't know how old your computer or software is, But Roxio use to be Adaptec. If you see Adaptec Easy CD creator or Direct CD, these are the older versions of Roxio.

smg: If you have windows xp, disable built in recording capabiltiy of your burner so it wont interfere with Nero or other burning programs. Right click your drive/properties/recording tab. Go from there.

Thanks alot guys.
My pc is only about 1 and 1/2 years old.
I did find in the Services part for CD Burning this:
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service (I assume that must be the name of my pcs cd burning software). I can disable it while in there. Is that OK to do and then go ahead and install Nero right after that?
Thanks for the help.

Do not uninstall IMAPI as this will render your burner useless for any recording. The IMAPI is the default image application which enables burning on the drive. Just install Nero - you shouldn'e have any problems.

Thanks for the help. I will make sure not to disable it. If I can ask you another question that I am getting different answeres for it would sure help alot. I hope I explain this so you will know what I'm trying to say, so please bear with me as this pc stuff is hard to put into words sometimes.
But here is what want to do.::
For my music cds I want to use Nero, and
for my movie dvd creating projects I want to use RecordNowMax (because the majority of the people in these forums appear to me to prefer it over Nero for making dvds). Anyway;
RecordNowMax states that there CANNOT be any other software burning program on the pc while it (RecNowMax4.5) is being used. AND,
it does NOT have an Uninstaller.
So here's the problem. If I wanted to be able to use both Nero and RecNowMax (Nero for music and RecNOw for dvds), how would I be able to uninstall RecNowMax when I switched over and wanted to make some music cds with Nero? Assuming of course that RecNowMax did NOT appear in the ADD/REMOVE section, because it seems that more often than not, that 90% of the time, whenever I install something, it never shows up in ADD/REMOVE so I am stuck with it unless I want to do a reformat which is really a pain.
I can however navigate thru the registry, but have never made any changes in it (a newbie like myself really should avoid that I am told). I just don't understand what people mean when they say upper and lower filters, or add the DWORD value etc.
Anyhow, other than that, if I can somehow disable RecNowMax while I'm using Nero, can I use Neros aspi
while using RecordNowMax also?
Thanks again for the help friend.

Cheezzzz
I can't find anything under properties/recording for either decice (CD or dvd burner) that mentions anything about what the burning software programs they are using are. Just stuff about cd recording, speed of recording and that kind of stuff. The only thing I did ever find was that my cd burner service was listed as IMAPI CD-Burning CO service (and that Discmania informed me to leave it alone or it would disable my burner).
But there is nowhere anywhere where I can find the software programs names let alone disable them in order to use Nero AND RecordNowMax (although not both at the same time as RecordNowMax says I cannot have any other burning program running on my pc at the same time while it is.
I am beginnig to think I am going to have to be led into the registry and perhaps do the unthinkable
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
fiddle with it.
Thanks also for the help Cheezzzz.

Hey Guys,

you CAN have RecordNow Max AND Nero on the same pc WITHOUT conflict.... Here's how:

UNINSTALL Nero COMPLETELY (you may need to use a regcleaner etc and delete folders from hard-drive)
UNINSTALL ASPI COMPLETELY (same caveat as above)
Re-Boot
Check that ALL the above is OUT...

Install recordNow Max and configure it...
Re-boot
Test that it works for DVD (use a DVD-RW if you have one handy)

Once you know it is working ok, Re-Boot.

Now install Nero - do NOT install ASPI.
Re-Boot
Test Nero with a CD
Test RecordNow with a DVD

RecordNow Max uses the px-engine for access to the writer, as long as you don't have BOTH RUNNING at the same time, you won't have any conflict (if you are worried you might ACCIDENTALLY run both at the same time, then write a couple of WinBatch scripts where each checks if the other program is in memory first etc.etc.)

I have been running Nero and PrimoDVD (precursor to RecordNow) in parallel for a couple of years now without conflict, and I am testing RecordNow Max at the moment; up till all is ok...

So, it can be done.

Have Fun...

Dr.Chips: That's fine except some drives require ASPI at all times and it is the most used. I would suggest installing either Nero or RecordNowMax but not both. There is really not much between them for DVD recording, except the price. Although I still use Nero 5.5.10.54 without problems, I would recommend RecordNowMax because it is just as good with easier interface if you are just starting, is half the price of Nero 6 and also includes a volume re-encoder for CD recording.

Hmmm,
Quote:
That's fine except some drives require ASPI at all times
I have a fair mix of drives on my various system, all of which have Nero installed for cd burning purposes, on a mix of Windows2000 and XP Pro.

Drives are:
Pioneer A04 (DVD Burner)
Pioneer 105 (DVD Burner)
Mitsumi CR-4809TE (16 X CD Burner with 16Meg cache)
Plextor T3 (24 x CD Burner)
Sony (24 x CD Burner)

and various CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives.
(admittedly, all those above are Big-Brand Names, I will not compromise my systems with cheap-and-nasty no-name kit)

I have not installed ASPI on any of the systems, yet they all work!!

This tempts me to raise the following questions of everyone:

1 - what software configurations cause the situation whereby ASPI MUST be installed for a drive to work?

2 - which drives (in readers experience) MUST have ASPI installed to work?

I have always considered ASPI to be a kludge left over from the old SCSI days when burners were invariably SCSI, expensive and slow... (yeah, I had a couple of Phillips SCSI 2-speed burners).

I am intrigued, this may be worthy of further investigation (with input from others, as I cannot reproduce the problem).

Hiya again,

I have done some further investigation...

Nero has as part of the installation a file called WNASPI32.DLL, this is an on-demand runtime-only DLL, it does not appear in the executable environment until it is required, and it unloads when no longer required.

It seems that Nero always calls WNASPI32.DLL as part of its startup, then (in my systems) immediately un-loads it.

So I will quite publicly admit that
Quote:
I have not installed ASPI on any of the systems, yet they all work!!
may be misleading.

I have not installed ASPI, other than as part of the DEFAULT Nero INSTALL, and have never noticed or seen it in memory in my systems.

I even tested the following on the two systems I have that have BOTH Nero and RecordNow Max (with Pioneer drives):

Run RecordNow Max & burn a DVD-R at 2 speed.
WHILE THE DVD IS BURNING,
run Nero and burn a data cd...

Both burned ok, verified ok, and were fully checked using FolderMatch..

Looking at the system profile while doing this did show WNASPI32.dll being loaded, read and then unloaded.

It seems that on my systems, Nero ONLY needs ASPI for verification purposes, and only during program startup.

So, I would like to make a change to my advice:
where I previously said
Quote:
Now install Nero - do NOT install ASPI.
I should like it to read:
Now install Nero - do NOT install ASPI, UNLESS testing shows the default ASPI install does not work..

My apologies to everyone if previous advice has caused some confusion or mis-lead anyone.

Told you I was intrigued....

Have Fun...

Well done DrChips, a nice piece of technical investigation. However isn't WINASPI32dll required for other programmes to run? Anyway I would think most people are quite happy to have one burner. I have the Pioneer 105 and I wouldn't dream of uninstalling the ASPI layer because it works absolutely fine with it and rips a DVD in about 20mins. Your points are still interesting though.

Yes,

some other programs may also rely upon wnaspi32.dll, and those invariably would reference the default Windows installation as provided by Micro$haft (in Win2000 & Xp it is normally located in C:\WINNT\system32).

The version of wnaspi32.dll that Nero uses is supplied by Nero as part of the Nero Install, and is normally located in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero - that is the DLL file that is accessed during program start.

The interesting point about this is:

When someone UPDATES ASPI, WHICH ONE IS BEING UPDATED????

The windows default is in a different location from the one Nero uses - see what I mean??

As I said earlier, RecordNow Max and Nero can co-exist quite happily.

Specialist tools for specialist jobs.
I personally find Nero is EXCELLENT for CD work and FLAKEY for DVD, and
RecordNow Max (or PrimoDVD) is EXCELLENT for DVD, but cumbersome for CD.

My opinions only, my experiences only.

BTW Discmania,
thanks for the back-scratch, you can join my fan-club anytime ;-)

Have Fun...

Thanks alot so much you guys. Praetor/Discamnia/drchips/RWG and those not mentioned but know who you are :)
I think i have it now after reading these last 6 or so posts. let me see if I have this right:
I have 2 burners btw (a cd burner and a dvd burner), naturally I would only use yje dvd burner for dvds and the cd burner for music and data cds so as to prolong the life of my dvd burner by not using it for all my music cds (I have over 150 music cds that I am going to reburn, so didn't want to cause premature burnout on the waaaay more expensive dvd burner.
Since I haven't installed either program YET......
I gather this is the way I should proceed:
A. Leave the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service alone
(ie don't disable it).
B. Now install RecordNowMax with everything it
includes (it's a version 4.5) and then install the px engine that the techs at RNM said I should install after installing the program I remember they said it was the last and most updated px engine as/and they weren't going to make anymore updates for it because they have stopped working on it and will not make anything more for it.
C. So after installing this updated px engine, reboot (and I guess it will overide the original px engine and replace it automatically upon reboot).
D. Now install Nero Burning ROM (from which I have it burned onto a cd as I locked the original cd away in a very cool and safe dark basement here in my home.
NOW... As I see my Nero on the cd I burned it to, is this what I am supposed to do before just double clicking on it to start its installation process ==
Locate the wnaspi32.dll and just delete it from the cd,
then double Nero and let it install, then reboot after that? And did then after that, when I want to switch back and forth between the two for the different programs, I didn't understand how to disable each one individually while using the other one and I assume that I would also be able to enable each one from the same place I disable them at.
I don't know how to use any regcleaners as I don't understand the registry enough to attempt to delete stuff and all. Newbie after all :)
The win batch thing was not understandable as well.
So I guess what I would then have is this==
When using RNMax, I would be using its; aspi driver for making my dvd movies. Then to use Nero, I need to disable RNM electronically (am I right about this?) perhaps in the Services section? Then enable Nero (again would I enable it in Services?) and then I would....
hmmmmm,,,, what do I do about Neros aspi (because I didn;t install it from the cd I had it burned to) in order to make music cds?
If you could explain how to uninstall it from the registry in a way a simpleton like myself can understand I would certainly try to uninstall/install it going into the registry when I switched back and forth between programs.
Many, many Thanks to all you guys for taking the time you have to help me out like this. I am definetly a fan of everyone of you. And Thank you to the new friend Dr.Chips.

Hiya smg,

It is easier than you think:

1 - leave IMAPI alone (it doesn't really matter)
2 - install RecordNow Max V4.5
3 - update the px-engine as advised by RNM
4 - reboot

so far, everything the same....

5 - install Nero as you normally would (don't worry about ASPI).

there will now be TWO instances of ASPI on your system, one that Windows knows about (the default installation supplied by Microsoft)
AND the one installed by Nero (that ONLY Nero knows about), DON'T WORRY ABOUT THIS!!!

6 - reboot
7 - you are done...

Only thing to try to avoid is running BOTH burning programs AT THE SAME TIME (it is stable for me, but I don't know what other stuff is in your system, so don't tempt fate, OK!!).

If you want to burn a DVD, check that NERO IS NOT RUNNING, run RNM & burn your DVD.

If you want to burn a CD, check that RNM IS NOT RUNNING, run Nero & burn your DVD.

The system will sort out the ASPI details automatically.

RNM uses the px-engine and any ASPI access it performs will be on the windows default one.

Nero will use its own ASPI, so no conflict there.

OK.

BTW, WinBatch is a batch programming language to allow you to take control of Windows & the programs that run under windows, you don't need it, but if you are interested in automating windows programs it can be invaluable.

If you want to know more, give me a shout..

Have Fun...

P.S. hey smg, you claim to be a Newbie though your forum status is Member which is a couple of steps up from Newbie!!!!

Thanks drchips for everything.
I meant newbie in relation to my knowledge of this pc stuff :)
I didn't realize my status was upgraded to member although I guess it's because I have been coming in here for over a year now I believe (certainly not because of my prowess with computers lol).
If I may ask, when you said there would be 2 instances of aspi in my system, I know there would be one (I assume the one that comes with RecordNowMax or is it included with the px engine?)
And the 2nd one lost me. After rebooting (after installing RecNowMax) when I install Nero, am I to just double click it off the burned cd and let it install everything (including its' aspi too?) Is that where the 2nd one comes from that you were talking about? I have Win XP Home, with a Pioneer DVR-A05 burner, with some no-name brand cd-rw writer.
I can't think of anything else I have running except wharever has running normally.
But now, when I need to disable (or enable) each program so as to use the other one, how do I go about doing that so as to insure that they aren't both running at the same time? I tried keeping up with the conversation you and Discmania were having and got lost. I respect all of the above mentioned people and know just from all my research how a one size doesn't fit all really applies to this dvd burning stuff because of different OS and configurations and other things also (other software etc etc.).
But to my knowledge, I don't have anything else at all added to my system (other than the Pioneer burner) which I bought last year).
It sounds from what you and Discmania have said that I am almost out of the woods (which would be a relief since I have had this burner for awhile now and am really itching to start using it). But I have always been a perfectionist and the idea of starting out making coasters without a totally thorough researching done is foreign to me :)
So if I'm right, then:
I will have both programs installed (ie RecNowMax first, then reboot, then
install Nero and I assume reboot again after installing it for the same reason I rebooted after installing RecNowMax). Now this is where I guess I will now have 2 ASPIs from right? I assume RecNowMax has an aspi also?
Then I guess it's just a matter of knowing how and where to turn each program On and Off at when I want to switch back and forth between the two programs>
Am I right about this so far?
And if I am, can you come down to my level and explain how to turn each one on and off so I can switch back and forth them?
WHEW!!! (taking back of hand to forehead).
As usual, I can't thank you and everyone else enough for this help (when neither has to, but have done so out of the kindness for the less fortunate).
This must be my karma returning back to me for all those people I helped push their cars off the road.
I was wondering when it would return lol.

I almost forgot to add. I thought win XP home didn't come with an aspi. Or so I have read many people as having said. I did read that win 95 and 98 and ME did have an aspi though, but everone seemed to agree that XP didn't come with one. Is that what you meant, does XP home indeed come with an aspi?
Thanks again friend

Hiya smg,

Yes, there WILL be two instances of ASPI in your XP Home system;

Instance 1 - located in C:\WINNT\system32, this is the default Windows ASPI as supplied by Microsoft, the one that comes with the Operating System; this is installed when XP is first loaded on the machine and is supposed to be there. This is the one that is used if a program requests wnaspi32.dll support.

Instance 2 - located in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero, this is the one that Nero installs for its own use. When Nero starts, it looks in its own directory for WNASPI32.DLL and throws a fit if it cannot find it there, whether it uses it or not.

This is NORMAL, don't worry about it, the programs will use the correct one.

Nero will ONLY USE ITS OWN version.

Anything else that requires ASPI will EITHER supply its own OR request Windows to supply the windows version.

No conflict, OK.

Yes, install Nero as normal (double-click the setup, whatever), Nero will install its own version of ASPI automatically - this is normal, nothing to be concerned about, OK.

RecordNow Max uses the px-engine as an interface between windows and the drive, if it needs ASPI, it requests the windows version, so no conflict with Nero, OK.

The tests I performed as stated in a previous post show that there is no conflict between RecordNow Max and Nero.

So, there is no need to "turn each program On and Off", they will sort themselves out, OK.

XP Home is just a brain-damaged version of XP Pro,
and XP Pro is just the tellytubbies version of Windows 2000 Pro with a few fancy frilly bits added in.

BTW, if you NEED to disable the IMAPI service you can, it seems that it CAN cause a problem with SOME configurations - I don't have enough data on that at this moment in time to make a statement.

Hope this clears it up for you.

Feel free to ask anytime.

Have Fun...

Thanks for the offer for (it appears I am not cmpletely out of the woods yet).
I went to make sure I had the aspi by Microsoft (as I have done that System restore to factory restore several times after downloading too many free programs I think).
But here's what happened. I went to:
Program Files>>Windows NT>> and alll that was in it were 2 folders called "Accessories" and one called "Pinball" and 3 things called "dialer" and "hypertrm" and "htrn_jis.dll" these last 2 had Hyperterminal something printed under the both of them. But there was nothing there for System32 or Winaspi etc. So I then went to:
Documents and Settings>>>My Name>>Windows>>>system: but there wasn't any system 32, just a system folder which is empty. I then tried looking in the drivers folder which was just below a download folder and it did have alot of drivers (I guess they were, but nothing even starting with W the last ones listed all started with "V". (ie no Winaspi etc.)
Then I went to: the folder below those listed to:
WINDOWS>>
and here were 2 system folders (one called "system" and one called "system 32") Eureka!!! I thought to myself.
lol.
well in neither system folder was there an winaspi etc. The closest match was one (located in the system 32 folder called "win32spl.dll"). And one called just "Win".
But nothing with any aspi in it. Could you have been mistaken about windows XP having an aspi. I think when I was at Microsofts homepage I remember them saying that XP home and I think they said X Pro and 2000 didn't ship with an aspi. And alot of people have been saying the same thing. No disrepect intended (I know how easy it is to forget things especially when it's of a technical origin. I had many problems thru the years as a mechanic with just that same thing. I had learned so much that I was replacing memories with different memories and losing stuff. But for the life of me I can't find am aspi anywhere in my pc. Not in Windows NT or system or system32 or even in the drivers folder.
Of course I have to assume that I must have missed it, but I did go thru everything 3 times and can't find it. I will go to Microsoft again and re-verify what I thought they had said about them not shipping/installing an aspi for XP (both) and 2000.
But I remember they said that win 95 and 98 and Me did have aspi.
Thanks again friend. I will repost as soon as I can after geting back from Bills place (MS).
I am beginning to think I am losing it.
I could have sworn they said XP Home didn't come with an aspi.
Well I am going blind, I guess it was about time for the mind to go lol.

I just went there and they did say that ASPI didn't come with XP. Whew!! I thought I was imagining it all lol.
But anyway I really really didn't want to use a windows one anyway as their instructions for installing adaptecs aspi was really confusing and I have no idea how I could have anyway going by their instructions. I believe someone said it was ridiculos the way MS tells people how to do things when they seem to make it hard to do on purpose.
Anyway, I also talked to a representative from RecNowMax again today and he said that RecNowMax could use the Neros aspi for operating with. So does that solve that issue about the aspi, I mean I read in Nero that you arent supposed to use their aspi for other burning programs. So does that mean that it won't work for RecNowMax? Or just that it WILL work, but only that you are not supposed to use it? During your testing of RecNOwMax, can you see if it will work OK using Neros aspi "wnaspi32.dll"? If it does that will just about answere and solve this whole thing for me (since I wont have to worry about how to install Neros aspi because it will install itself automatically when I double click on Nero to install it on my pc (if I understood you correctly).
Thanks alot again.

Well heres another update.
The representative fromStomp RecNOwMax sent me a letter stating (written in blue) that RecNowMax comes with its own aspi and something else. So I guess its a new problem now. Can/will both aspis from both programs (neither of them being of windows origin)coincide together without conflicting? And does that mean I still won't have to worry about turning them on and off when I am using either one with this new development?
Thanks again friend
