Hi,
From what I have read, PS3 games are not region coded. Therefore if I was to buy a console from China (really cheap) would that work over here in the UK? Obviously would need to get a UK power supply but would UK games and Blue Rays works?
Yes, games are currently region free, and i am not aware of any plans to start region coding them, although this does not neccessarily mean it will not happen. Movies however ARE region coded, and so only imported movies from that region would work.
thanks for your answer. I was under the impression that the console was region free too? Im only after the console for the blue ray player so if it wont work over here then its not worth the trouble :)

As far as i am aware the console will play any game, as long as they are not region coded themselves, which at present they are not. Blu-ray movies however are i think, and so will only play on consoles from that region...as far as i know anyway, someone else might know different though.

Hi, lyminster,
If I were you, i would not buy PS3 from China/Hong Kong no matter how cheap it is.
The games are not region-locked if you play those offline.
BUT these games are region-locked if you play those online.
I got PS3 from Hong Kong, and I can't play Resistence of Fall (UK) game online due to region-protection online.
Thus I forked out extra money to buy UK PS3 so I can play with my friends online.
If I were you, I would opt for UK PS3 which you can play online with your friends with any PAL games. Plus you can play PAL PS2 games on it, so you have more room now rather than having Chinese PS3 next to UK PS2 to take up valuable room space.

Thats interesting to know...i didnt realise that the games were region coded when playing online. Im guessing that this would work the other way aswell, as in if i bought a game from somewhere like playasia then it wouldnt let me play it online?

At least, I can use chinese PS3 as stand alone blu ray player downstair, next to family tv (for family use), while my UK PS3 is for my sole use only in my room.

If your PS3 is from Asia/China/Hong Kong, and if you buy games from playasia.com, then you should be able to play online no problem.
I used to play Chinese motorstorm online on my Hong Kong PS3 without any problem. It's just that I can't play Resistence of Fall (UK) game online on my HK ps3 due to region-protection online.
Unless you are expert with Asian languages (including mandarin/cantonese), there are not many (HK) games that have got english chatrooms/english online game.
My Chinese Motorstorm PS3 games showed about well over 30 non-english rooms, and yet there was only 5 english rooms (based in Asia, not US or European :( ) last time I checked (maybe last year i think??).
If you want to play online alot with PS3 games, I suggest you buy your PS3 from your country rather than import/buy it overseas. Save you hassle and troubles, believe me.
You can't access to European/US English online chatroom from your asian game.
I can't play my Chinese Motorstorm against my friend wiht his UK Motorstorm because his chatroom is based in UK or Europe while my chatroom based in Hong Kong.
With games, you can't talk or play to your friends from different regions of world when it is same game (i.e Motorstorm). But you can chat to your friend online when you are not using games (or email/messaging).
A bit pain in the ass but here you go. That's what you get for - cheap chinese PS3 but no access to European/US english chatrooms/games, along with lack of online feature of any PAL/NTSC games.
