OK. Hold up the power button for 5 seconds until your PSP shuts off. Then, as soon as you turn on your PSP, hold R RIGHT AFTER YOU TURN THE PSP ON. Then you'll see Recovery Mode.

Flashing a Slim is easy as long as you've got a Pandora battery.
Unbricking your Phat is also easy. Create a MMS using the TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller (google it). You can do that with your Slim on official firmware, absolutely no problems.
Make sure to pick option 4 during install ("Universal Unbricker - this also installs 3.71 M33").
Then use your newly created MMS, and your Pandora battery, to unbrick your Phat.
Once the Phat is unbricked you can leave it as it is, or install an official firmware onto it.

Like I said, you need a Pandora battery. You'll also need a USB cable if you don't already have one.
Once you buy your Slim, you can use it to connect to your PC (with a USB cable), to create the magic memory stick, using the TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller, which I linked to in my previous post.
Then you can use your Pandora battery and magic memory stick on your OLD PSP to unbrick it.
You won't have to install any custom firmwares on your new PSP Slim if you don't want to. All you need to use it for is to connect to your PC via USB to create the magic memory stick.
