Hi,

I was updating my PS3 to 2.20 because according to the official statement that it would playback any H264 video which I'm happy as lots of my videos are encoded in H264/MPEG-4.

However, I tried to playback any H264/MPEG-4 video but it doesn't work at all, apparently it says that PS3 doesn't support that format(!!).

I feel like official PS3 update cheats me here but again, it could be that I miss out something that allow me to playback H264 video on PS3.

I ask people here - does anyone manage to play any H264/MPEG-4 video successfully on PS3 (with 2.20 version)??

Please advise!

Many thanks in advance!! :D

Not sure how you're not able to play h264/mp4, I have no issues. What exactly happens when you try to play the file? Try to demux the file using YAMB, then remux with TsMuxeR creating a m2ts file.

Well, I'll tell you what happened.

Firstly, it won't read any H264 video off my PC (via streaming with WMP 11).

Secondly, I tried to play H264 video from my USB stick. It won't display those. After I force it to display all, it just displays my H264 video as "unsupported data type"! I tried to playback it back but the error says it is unsupported format.

Know why??

As for demux/remux - I was considering that option but I didn't go ahead because what is the point of doing that if the firmwire 2.20 suppose to playback h264 video without going through the hasslement of recoding video.

I don't have plenty of time to re-encode all my H264 video so that PS3 would able to play those back.

Seems PS3 never test its firmwire for bugs properly....!!

Anyone have similiar experience as mine?

"Container" or "extension" refers to the file type. Is the video file Title.mp4, .mkv, .avi, or is it .264 or .h264? An easy way to figure the file type out is to right click on the file, select "Properties" and it will tell you under the "General" tab.

Ah I got it.

Yes i can confirm that the container/extensoin is MPEG-4 (or .mp4).

PS3 should be able to play .mp4 right? but PS3 says it is unsupported data type(!).

Any idea why?

Many thanks in advance as always

When you tried to play it from the USB stick, did you copy it to the hard drive first? If not try that. To copy; move to the Video section of the PS3 XMB, scroll to the USB icon, press triangle, and either select display all then copy, or just copy.

Also, if the h264 level is higher than 4.1 you might have problems playing it on the PS3, however if the file is already mp4 it should be at 4.1 or lower. If it is 5.1 there are a couple of ways to lower it, but it does invlove demuxing and remuxing as I mentioned earlier.

If the file is larger than 4 gigs it might not play either, remuxing to m2ts will solve the large file problem.

Try my first suggestion, if that doesn't work I can help. The demux/remux process doesn't take long and the programs you need you can download right from this site for free.

Good luck.

Thanks for info.

I have tried that option (copying it off USB stick into PS3 hard disc) but it didn't work. It remains as "unsupported data type".

As for H264 profile level. How do you know which level the H264 video is in? I checked MediaInfoRaw and it didn't provide such info.

Please advise on how to identify H264 level from the video?

Thanks again!

I suggest you get a hold of TSremux and open your video file with it. It will tell you what profile level your stream is. If it is 5.1 (which it probably is) you're gonna need to change it using h264info. Its pretty simple actually.

You do not need to use h264info anymore to change the level. What you need to do is:

Use a program called YAMB to extract all file types, you should get a .264 file and an audio file, most likely AAC. Then use TsMuxeR, when you open the .264 file pay close attention to what level it is, change it if neccesary to 4.1. Load your audio file, then make sure the m2ts radio button is selected (it is one of four options), then mux.

Get TsMuxeR here: http://www.smlabs.net/tsMuxer/tsMuxeR_1.6.3(b).zip

Get YAMB here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._tools/yamb.cfm

I have tried your suggestions but i still not find any info about the level.

There is not even an option in YAMB that will display the level!

I don't know where you can find such info about the level of H264 in YAMB??

If there is, then please provide instruction so I can find the level.

Many thanks

I'm still using mkv2vob with no problems. I just burnt a m2ts to a disc and am loving the quality. Is there any way I can stream these with tversity? My PS3 doesn't even show them on my media server.

If you're using TVersity the m2ts extension needs to be renamed to m2t. I use Cyberlink Media Pro/Deluxe... (can't remember the actual title) to stream/copy, there's no renaming, no indexing or updating. Just choose which folder to monitor and keep the files you want to stream there.

All you need to use YAMB for is to extract the raw video/audio files. The AVC level changing takes place in TSmuxeR.

Glad I could help. Also, if you decide to burn your m2ts movies to DVD use Nero Burning Rom... DVD-UDF, use manual settings and set to 2.5 partition tyoe... or else it will not play. It would also be a good idea to copy from the DVD to the PS3 HDD rather than playing from the DVD... you'll save the wear-n-tear on your PS3.
