Induce RROD to get my console repaired?

I have an "unplayable disc error" on my 360 after already having a RROD in December 2007. M$ sent me a refurbished console and now it is broken 3 months later. The warranty on this console apparently expired on 3/11/08 (2 weeks ago). So now they want me to pay $99 to have this one repaired since it isn't a RROD.
Is there any way known to induce a RROD so that I can have my repair for free? I'm a college student so I don't have a bunch of money to give microsoft for a console that shouldn't be broken in the first place.

If the RROD is from the console overheating couldn't you just stuff towels or something similar behind it while playing Halo 3 or some other newer game?
From what I remember some people had their consoles RROD ~15 minutes after playing Halo 3 so just put some bath towels right on the exhaust (and intakes, if you really want) and play away for a while if you don't get a RROD after an hour or so I don't know how your going to "induce" one.
Have you tried de-dusting your console's DVD drive to see if that fixes the disk error problem?

I haven't tried de-dusting it yet, I haven't had a chance to go get any canned air. I'd claim RROD but I think they test it when it comes in to make sure (dunno, I would just imagine they do?) Anyway I'm going to try to overheat it with towels l8r tonight after I try the canned air but yet, I just think it's ridiculous that they want to charge me because they sent me a broken refurbished console and I'm 2 weeks past my new warranty.

I understand why you would want to do that, I had the same read error problems also....but I do have the RROD now and uhh, lets just say its been 6 weeks and 4 service requests and I still don't have a box...everytime I call they say "Oh the last service request didn't go through, I'll put another one in", and I still DON'T have a box.

darn....they did decent enough last time, still took about 2 weeks for me to get a box + 6 more to get it back, but I don't think it's gonna be any faster if I pay them $50 lol

A 360 laser cost me £14 from a nice bloke in Leeds. Sometimes you can get good s*** on flea-bay.

I haven't opened it yet, I'm just putting some towels on it so should be fried fairly quickly. mwuhahahaha

wrapping it in towels doesnt work quickly. I tried the same thing you are and i overheated my xbox over 10 times, and it still hasnt gotten the rrod after 2 months. Just get a new laser like the dude said and replace it. It only takes a little bit of work and its worth it.

OK well I now have the overheating 2 red lights on the left side, so not RROD...has anyone else tried this besides the guy above me? And how difficult is replacing the laser? I've modded my xbox before but never been inside the 360 and don't want to break it more if I'm just gonna screw it up when I could get it fixed by MS. Thanks for the help again.

Replacing the laser means youd have to:
Open the case
Open the drive case
Take out the old laser
Solder off the solder point of the new laser (Only needed if you buy a new laser)
Re-attach the laser
(You may have to configure the POT if your new laser isn't perfect)
Done =)
I've done it myself but i wouldn't reccomend someone who doesn't know what they're doing do it.

hmmm, well I must say...I suck at soldering (I keep meaning to learn to do it better, but no time). I'm comfortable taking off the case and wiring in harddrives/lights but I don't think taking the drive apart is a good idea for me right now lol.
I am thinking about just getting a new DVD drive but honestly very confused about it. I've replaced the drives on several original xbox's but never on a 360 and read somewhere that it has to be flashed to match your board, is that true/difficult? I'm looking at this drive but would appreciate a second opinion:

That one looks fine IF your drive at the moment is a samsung / tosh ver ms28. If not then you might have to get into spoofing an uneccesary extra stage. So if i were you id take the case off your 360. Find out exactly what drive and find a match on ebay.
As for what you have to do it does have to be flashed to match your board but thats not hard. It involves finding your drive key of your original 360 drive. Injecting that key into the new drive. And your done :-)

OK, and one other question for you, if I take the case off, obviously it's going to void the warranty (even though it isn't there) but will MS still repair it if whatever I do falls through? Or will they not even take it back if it's been opened?
