So I was wondering, if I want to play new games or online do I have to update both the wii firmware and wii modchip firmware? How can I update the wii firmware with the mod installed. I want to buy a wii, but just want to make sure I understand it all before I dig into it.

Let's stick w/ one thread for your questions instead of creating a new every few minutes. It's also harder to give you the right advice unless the whole picture is known.
Do this - research 1st - check the stickies here like the one about modchips, google etc.
