I had a guy offer me to mod my 360, he said that he would install a mod chip, but just use a flashdrive to upgrade the firmware to 1. something! He said that I would just have to backup games, but I will not be able to boot from hard drive, but use the games only!Just wanted to know if its possible to do this or if anyone have ever heard of this kind of mod? If so how is it done or what will he need/do, so that I can watch over him......lol

well if hes putting a chip in it, then there is no reason to upgrade the FW to 1.something unless the chip has a newer FW which it could idk, i just flash the dvd drive personally. as for not booting from the HD, im assuming you mean booting games from the HD??? if this is the case, its impossible to play games from the HD right now anyways, unless its an arcade game that you download from the market place. let me know if this is what your talking about or not.

No, this is not the case, im not sure how to explain this. But he claims he is not installing any kind of chips or soddering inside. All he said was that he would come by with his flashdrive, and upgrade the firmware so that I would be able to play copied games. Is that possible without any mod chip?

yea, as dindi said, you dont have to instal a chip to play burnt games. the only drive that needsa chip is the hitachi 79 drive. so what hes saying is correct. im still a little confused on what you mean by not booting from the HD though.

Maybe Im the one confusing the thing! Because I have a ps2 that boots up to the HD using the mod but connected thrugh a HD. So maybe I got it mixed up. But is it possible to just do it myself instead of paying the $100! Does anyone have this firmware???

$100!!!
First off as it has been said you don't need any mod chip (which you know).
Secondly there is currently NO way to load games onto your HD and play them off of that.
Third. Yes it's very easy to flash the drive yourself as long as you do not have the Hitachi 79 drive (how old is your 360?). All the information you need is located at the top of this forum, the threads that are stickied(IE important) are bold.
Fourth if you're too lazy to do it yourself negotiate the guy down. $100 for less than an hours worth of work is obscene, if he does this often he can probably get this done in 15 minutes. If you tried to do it it'll probably take an hour if you're as careful as I was taking the case off (though it is pristine if I do say so myself), though I did have a cigarette or two in between the cursing of plastic tabs.

I got my 360 back in 2006, so its an older model. Not sure which drive I have though. Okay, never mind about loading games from the HD, I understand now how to create the backups using DVD+DL. But are there any effects that can happen with doing this? Can it screw up my system? Can I always just return back to the normal firmware if it gets screwed up?

if the guy doesnt know what hes doing theres a chance he could mess it up, but thats highly unlikely now. the one downside is that you can get banned from LIVE. its a 50/50 chance so theres no need of asking how to avoid it because you cant, its just a matter of time before you get caught and banned.
