will the update from brawl fix my semi bricked wii?

It depends on what firmware bricked your wii. Brawl has update 3.1 so if you have a US wii bricked with firmware 3.0 or earlier and run a US copy of brawl then yes, it will fix it. Otherwise no, it wont fix the wii and you'll have to wait for a newer game with 3.2u update.

No, a backup copy will work fine.
