If my modem is a piece of crap and i buy a linksys WRT54G would it work with the wireless networking adapter?

i would go for the WRT54GS with speedbooster myself. And if you do not already have the wireless adapter you can get one from Linksys that will work as well.

Unless it's absolutely impossible to run a length of Cat5 network cable from your modem/router to the 360, forget wireless. Too many people lag out games with the crappy wifi adapter.
