hello all you techies out there,

i have just become the proud owner of a nintendo wii and i must say its greeeeeat !!

however, information is rere to say the least.

to be honest before i bought it i wasn't even aware of the photo viewer and the video player in mp4 from the sd card and internet options available !!

i didnt even know there was an sd card slot!!

so.

hows about someone making a thread about new software, hardware, cool things to do, etc etc for the wii

what else can i do there must be loadsa stuff !!

also i have a nintendo ds and found through this very site about the r4d cards and the benifits !! i now have more than 30 games for my d.s. ( wink wink )

did i read somewhere about linking your d.s. with your wii wirelessly?

if so can i play my ds games through/on the wii? i.e. on the tv screen using the wii remote

are nintendo wii games available as roms to "back up" onto s.d. cards to play on your wii ?? (wink wink again )

any observations ( other than " i am an idiot" ) would be great to receive,

p.s. i know i am an idiot lol

thanks all

Well thats alot of questions. I'll try to work my way down the list.

"did i read somewhere about linking your d.s. with your wii wirelessly?

While some games do have a linking feature its restricted to a handful of games. And even in those you cant play the DS games on your wii, mostly you just link them to get unlockable features (linking unlocks new game modes in geometry wars and if you have pokemon diamond or pearl and battle revolution for the wii you can trade pokemon with yourself between the games)

"are nintendo wii games available as roms to "back up" onto s.d. cards to play on your wii ??"

Roms do not yet work on the wii. If you have a modchip you can download a disk containing roms of older games but it will only run in gamecube mode. Which means you'll need a gamecube controller to play anything and a gamecube memory card to save. Theres currently no way to play roms from an SD card or with anything besides a gamecube controller.

"can i play dvd movies on my wii ???"

Only with a modchip and even then you need a GCOS boot disk to load the DVD software each time you'd like to watch a DVD.

"is there a wii web browser for surfing the internet ?"

Yes, opera is available for download from the wii store channel.

"can i connect my laptop to my wii and use the wii remote as a wireless mouse on the t.v. screen?"

Possabily, though not the way you're thinking of doing it. The wiimotes use bluetooth to connect to the wii. If your laptop supports bluetooth then there are programs you can download to let you use the wiimote as a mouse. With the right output cables you can also connect your laptop to the TV and use the wiimote as a mouse on there.

Very cool video, I've seen it before but its still awsome. That guy wasnt using a wii though, just the wiimote and his laptop and TV. Still it shows very well what the technology is capable of.

I hope some wii game developers saw that video and got some ideas from it.

Wow that is a cool video. I've never seen that particular one, but I've seen others by that guy. It would be awesome if the big N developed games using that 3D virtual world stuff.

Opera - go to the shopping channel and buy Wii points. Then use some of the points to get Opera and the internet channel. You can buy many retro games from older platforms using Wii points and play them on the Wii as well (Virtual Console).

Don't waste your time trying DVDs - the drive in the Wii isn't suitable for DVD playback even if your Wii is modded - and yours isn't.

You can add other channels via the shopping channel - some are free and also some are not even worth having :) There will be some added with in time with certain games as well but there aren't loads of really useful ones - contrary to what you expect.

opera !!

do i have to buy opera from there shopping channel?

i already have it for my nintendo ds on an s.d. card can i upload it from the sd card or run it directly from the card?

is opera a once only payment?

on the ds its really slow whats the download speed like on the wii?

gamecube !! (gc)

i know you can buy/download games and also use the old gc discs

can i use the wii mote for gc games or do i need a gamecube controller ( which i just plug into the wii right? ) and are they readily available/expensive/worthwhile to buy ?

download/buying games from the shopping channel.

when i buy a game i believe i can save it to an sd card to save space on my wii memory.

can i then take that sd card to a friends house to play the game on their wii?

thanks for your patience.

Yes you will have the buy the Opera Browser from the Shopping Channel.

Yes once you buy it you can re-download it again later if you wish.

The speed while browsing on the Wii is actually pretty fast. Can load YouTube videos rather quickly.

You will have to use GC compatible devices when you play a GC game. You will also need to buy a separate GC memory card.

Each VC game you download off of the channel will have to stay with the Wii that it has been downloaded from. If you copy it into an SD card and try to play it on another Wii it will not work.

really? so if your playing something like mario strikers or whatever, your going to have to change the settings of the buttons so you can play it with the gamecube controller? and like if in wii sports( althought why would you want to back that up? im just using it as an example) and your playing tennis, would the A button do lob shots and B do hard shots or something?

Huh? no, I was talking about roms. Mario strikers and wii sports are wii games and will run exactly like origional wii games would run with the wiimote. The only things that require the GC pad are GC games and GC homebrew. The nes and snes emulators we have currently are GC homebrew and so require the controller for them.

And actually I heard recently that there is a new twilight hack version with a nes emulator that can play origional nintendo roms. But from what I heard its still using the gamecube controller so its not really an improvment except for people with unmodded wii's.

LOL - not everybody is a pirate you know! Some actually back up games (or grab backups from the net) so they can protect originals from damage. That's why the term "backup" is used as opposed to "pirate copy".
