I bought a second hand xbox 360 and it was a modded firmware,
is there anyway to detect what firmware is on my xbox?

is that difficult? and is there a high risk of ruining the system?
I have decent computer hardware experience, opened original xbox and replaced drive there.

You can just search xbox 360 drive in google and you can find a site where it can give pics of the drives and show you what type you have. Sorry i dont remember the site off hand but that is what i did to figure out my drive.
